According to there discription on the website the alternative does NOT have the check valve in it. With out this check gas would leak out when disconnected.

I did not call them but can if there is a substitute that has the check.

I used the Acetyl ones available at McMaster-Carr at $13.68 per pair. They are rated for gasoline. Items 5012K712 and 5012K672

That is what people are trying to replace! The plastic ones are occasionally cracking, causing fuel leaks. Even worse, if the end breaks off, a massive leak ensues.

Oops! I didn't realize these were the same part numbers, as Bigbear was referencing brass units while these are stainless steel. But hey... I got pics!

They are chrome plated brass, not stainless steel.

I searched the manfacturer's web site (Colder Products), and they have stainless in some products, but not these particular items.

I also tried to find another distributor, no luck. McMaster Carr has some sizes in plated brass, but not the 5/16" tube ID that is needed here.

The Colder Products part numbers are:

Male - LCD22005
Female - LCD17005

The ones they are replacing are black plastic that is not rated for gasoline. These are. If I wasn't such a tightwad I probably would use brass too.

CPC makes the fittings, and the black ones are most likely the same acetal material, just colored differently, maybe at the request of BMW?

Here is the CPC catalog, you will notice there are no black fittings in the type/size needed. http://www.colder.com/Downloads/IndCat_REV_FINAL.pdf

I know BMW has made some mistakes, but using a material for these not rated for gasoline is not one they are likely to make.

The fittings are cracking/breaking at the neck of the barbed portion, probably due to the strain the hoses put on them since they are pretty well jammed in place, along with the heat and vibration. They are not failing due to chemical attack. Some have suffered "O" ring failures, but we learned a long time ago that it is very cheap to have several "O" rings on hand, and change them when doing service.

By far the best approach is to use the chrome plated brass fittings, but they are not as readily available, and cost considerably more.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work...I want to achieve it through not dying.
