Ft. Worth Luggage Rack

Hello, I am happy to say that I am a new owner of a 2003 LT, however as I look outside and we now have 4" of fresh snow here in Canada, I am counting the days until I can finally get out on it. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a Ft. Worth Rack, I can't seem to find the website. Thank you.

You might be able to find one on Ebay, buy the folks that made it no longer are around.

Couldn't find one. But there is a new guy making one. I coughed up the cash and got one.

These are some nice looking options. I must admit that removing the trunk on an LT seems like buying a pickup and removing the box.

Nah, It's like buying a used pick-up and removing the 80's fiberglass cap that came with it

Re: Ft. Worth Luggage Rack

Several weeks ago, after reading some old forum threads, I decided to remove my top case to determine if there was a big difference in bike handling without it. I went for a ride and loved the way the bike handled without the additional weight up high. I got on a scale and determined that the empty case weights almost 34lbs.

I decided to replace the case with one of these racks. Frankly, I was always unhappy with the limited internal space within the top case; much of it occupied by the speakers. I now use the Marsee, 50 Liter ZIPP Bag. It weighs nothing compared to the 34lb top case and clips onto the rack at 6 connection points. It provides a lot of flexibility with items you can carry, and easily holds two full face helmets along with other stuff. It has four external zip off bags as well. It appears to be very water resistant but also comes with a rain cover. In typical Marsee style, it seems to be very durable. Even if I load it with 34 pounds of stuff, I'm still running lighter than I would with the top case.

I haven't yet had an opportunity to put it to the test it on a road trip. My "hope" is that I will be able to eliminate one bag, by placing all my clothing and essentials in the Marsee bag and my camping gear in my dry bag...time will tell if that is actually possible. I recognize that there will be times that I will need the top case back on (pillion), so the rack design allows me to easily add the top case (on the rack) back on if I desire.

Nice cover on your seat Bob. Just a cover or an aftermarket seat?

Mark,

The rear seat is an aftermarket Kontour seat that I purchased about 10 years ago. About 3 years ago I gave up on the Kontour as a comfortable LD seat and purchased a RDL for the front. The rear remains as a support platform for my dry bag

Does it at least make a good support platform?

I am not sure if Kontour is even in business anymore. I think the owner used to visit here now and then, but I haven't heard anything in some time from him.

Re: Ft. Worth Luggage Rack

The short answer is yes, but a bare metal frame would provide the same.
On my previous BMW, I had a Russell saddle and planned to get another one when I bought my LT in 06'. I ended up with the Kontour after the owner touted its benefits on this forum. It's a good seat for just riding around in the summer, but if you ride distance over many days and or ride in the cold, it falls short, in my opinion.
