Strange Idle

In Dallas the last few weeks it is has been cool followed by 80 degree days. A few days ago I started my '05 at work drove about 2 miles and gut stuck at a light. Engine temp was half way everything seemed fine. After sitting still for a few minutes the tach started jumping back and forth between 800 and 1200 rpm. If I gave it a little gas it would go away but then come back. After I got under way again I ran through the gears up to about 5000 and then got to another light, didn't do it. Got home and let it idle for 10 minutes and it didn't do it. Same thing happened yesterday. Anyone else have this issue and is it something that needs to be addressed.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: Strange Idle

have you had the battery disconnected? could be normal if yes, at 2 miles possibly the tps re learning. Keep riding as you cant fix it until it becomes constant fault, canister removal done?

Re: Strange Idle

If you have anyone nearby with a GS911, you can check for codes and to make sure the temp sensors are reading correctly as it warms up.

I don't know if the starter screw being lose can cause a bad idle but i have read in threads here that it can cause the tach to jump around. If you have any flickering lights, i would check that screw for being present and tight. It is the ground point for the load shed relay.

Re: Strange Idle

I did just change the battery and have not ridden to much. Ran our of town last night and back this morning, 250 mi. Supposed to be warm again so I'll see if it does is again. What is the canister?

The charcoal canister is located under the top case and is part of the emissions systems on the bike. There are instances where in an over fill or tip over where fuel can saturate the canister and block the vapor purge placing vacuum on the fuel tank causing it to collapse inward and damage the fuel level sensor. The telltail signs are hearing a rush of air when you open the tank and if it went far enough, your fuel sensor would not read correctly from the tube being damaged. Many have simply removed the canister and blocked the purge valve to prevent this potentially costly damage and it is called the canisterectomy. Causes no functional difference with the operation of the bike.

Re: Strange Idle

After a battery change it helps to do a throttle position reset. Key on, don't start, move the throttle grip from 0 to 100% three times and turn the key off.
