Windshield replacement

I would like to know how to replace the windshield on my 2005 LT. I want to put on the stock windshield.

Standing to the side of the bike grab the chrome trim on the windshield & pull it towards you. With the chrome strips removed, remove the 2 screws on each side, that's it.

Don't lose the rubber washers. Two per screw, IIRC, one on each side of the windshield.
You may want to buy new screws that already have the Loctite in them(actually plastic inserts, I think). Do not use liquid Loctite!!! It will cause your windshield to crack.

You may want to get some spare rubber washers too. I dropped one of mine down inside. Never found it.

When reinstalling, don't over tighten, you can crack your windshield. My BMW certified mechanic, who I paid to install a new shield after I had over tightened and cracked mine, gave me these instructions for applying torque to the windshield mounting screws: "Tighten until you see the rubber washer start to compress, then just a little more."

About a thousand miles after he installed it, I noticed that one of my mounting screws was loose. I don't know if it backed out, or was never tightened properly. It probably did not back out, since I made sure that he installed new self-locking screws. I took the part about "...then just a little more." to mean about 1/8 of a turn. Which is what I did about 15,000 miles ago. So far, so good.
By the way, he says they sometimes over tighten, and that sometimes the windshields are defective, and they crack anyway.

Re: Windshield replacement

Before putting screws in, coat them with clear fingernail polish.
Acts like Locktite to keep screws from loosening but wont hurt windscreen like locktite.
