I am not a reverse module specialist but plugging in things with power applied is not normally a good thing especially when you hear a crack. I would start looking for a new module on ebay as soon as the ones who know more about these things chime in and you get some possibly better advise with some things to check.

"Crack" is bad! If you don't have a Clymer manual, get one. It will provide you with a wealth of information.
