Question Handling Improvement?

BMW increased both rake and trail on the LT for 2005, IIRC. The Magazine guys loved it, said it improved the handling. Many of you say the same. So, what did they change? I'm guessing telelever and fork brace, but I don't KNOW. Any one know for sure? Can I retrofit the parts to my 2000? Will my old fender fit, with minor mods?

Harv,

On 05's and up the fork angle is changed which gave it alittle more stability @ slow speed among other changes like adding 18 HP and skinnier (Worse) seat. Added some nice chrome touches.

I can vouch for the fender fitting older LT's as last weekend when I was installing aux lighting on my 05 we took my fender off and installed it on Matt's 03 LT - It fit fine.

wobble

I have a 05 and, at 30,000 miles, I developed a wobble at slow speeds (<40mph). The dealer removed the front end (I use this term loosely) and installed an 04 front end. Anyone else have this issue?

There are a lot of posts about this one. First I've heard of anyone actually trying an older front end as a fix. How's it working? Also, not to make you nervous, but the wobble isn't limited to the newer bikes, it just seems more common on them. I tried many times to duplicate this issue on my '99 without success. Recently, on a very worn front tire I finally managed to get a wobble going. It took several tries and I haven't done it since replacing the tire but it can happen. Hope this fixes yours.

Mine developed the "Wobble" when the 020 tire had 4,500 miles on it.
Since replacing it with the Metz 880 no more slow speed (30-40 mph hands off HB) wobble - Course the tire is not worn down yet either!

Other than that I have no complaints - This bike handles great!
Much better that it should for such a big heavy bike.....

Actually the 04 and 05 front ends are the same. The only difference is in the fork bridge(lower) and main frame and that is between pre Dec 2003 and post. Everything else is the same (fork lowers were upgraded for the integral brakes on 02). There were very few 04's in the US as the 05 was introduced very early in 04.

Just to be clear, the fork parts are the same, but the '05 MY fork geometry is different; IIRC, slightly steeper (less rake) to quicken the steering at low speeds -- that's certainly consistent with my experience on my '05 and '06. Easily accomplished by pulling the forks back a hair by simply locating the lower ball joint/telelever intersection a bit to the rear, as the tops of the forks are held in rubber mounts that can accommodate the angle change with no modification.
