Unhappy Top trunk mounting points cracked

The two rear mounting points (the points where the bolts secure the trunk to the plate under it) on the bottom of my top trunk have cracked. Has anyone experienced this and what was the solution, aside from replacing the bottom half of the trunk?

Hmm, that's a new one for me - anyone else?

Been in any accidents or maybe a Paris-Dakar run?

It may be from overloading the trunk, at least that's the only think I can see that would have caused these mounts to crack.

Yes I have overloaded my trunk. In the past have bungee corded many objects to it that were placed on the passenger seat. Not sure how to repair yet if possable.

You might try some fiberglass body putty. I tried some on a Yamaha Venture that I found a broken saddlebag on. It seemed to work fine. I did the work not long before I sold the bike so I never got to try it on a trip fully loaded. It sure seemed to be holding strong so I suspect that it lasted for the new owner.

You would likely be best to put in a metal plate on the bottom of the trunk for added rigidity after any repair. If it is on just the bottom and not the sides then repainting shouldn't be too noticeable either. Of course, you would want to make sure not to overload the trunk after that as well.

I would suggest J-B Weld'ing some metal mending plates to the both sides of the bottom of the trunk. Perhaps some small nuts and bolts, as well. But I honestly can't imagine what you did to crack the trunk bottom like that.

I'm not sure from your description of the problem but you might look at using some epoxy designed for plastics. This appears to be what BMW used to join the parts of the top and side cases together. This might work if it is completely hidden, you can also buildup an extra layer in the location of the crack. I used it to reattach the tool pouch holder in the side case after it came loose. The mounting bracket is made of metal and the case seems to be made of some type of plastic. It has held for over 2 years now. YMMV

Exclamation Top Case Mounting Bolts..

It is hard to imagine cracking that plastic particularly with the extra thick support there. Is it possible a gorilla had previously tightened the mounting bolts? They should only be tightened to 9 nm-m.

I've bungied lots of stuff on the seat to the trunk rack too, that may have been part of the problem. I use my bike for everything and have on many occasion bungie many things in that manner without thinking of the extra load it places on the rear mounts. I've glued some of the cracks back using industrial strength super glue and used epoxy filler to build up both the inside and outside of the mounts. This seemed to have helped, until I noticed this week that the epoxy had separated from the bottom on one side. I've thought of adding some type of metal to the bottom to re-enforce it also. Thanks for the tips.

I don't think they were. Didn't take too much to loosen them to take the trunk off for repairs.
