Re: Top Case Gone

I took mine off and it makes for much better handling with the lighter weight. I put a black rack on the rear in its place and am quite content with what storage I have.

Re: Top Case Gone

I did try it and like it. Seems a bit quicker and handles quicker in the corners. I like it that way. Oh, my radio is gone too. It quit a long time ago.

Well that an easy decision then, just strap the missus on with a bungee cord

Re: Top Case Gone

I have a 200 LT that I bought a little over 1 year ago. I am an Iron Butt member and like to ride. I take at least one 3000 mile trip a year and we always camp. This past summer I removed the top case and liked the feel. For the trip I have a Cabellas bag that I strapped on in place of the case and it is water proof. It held my sleeping bag, air mattress, 3 man tent (I like the room), camp chair, and goodies such as lights, extra batteries etc. in the side pockets. It weighed in at 35 pounds and sits lower than the top case. The top case would not hold the same gear and the top case, empty weighs about 35 pounds. The bike handles a little better and is not quite so top heavy. I have since bought one of the flat racks in place of the top case.
If the top case is needed I undo 4 bolts, lift off the rack and spacers, use 4 bolts to mount top case and plug into 2 plugs after removing rear seat (2 bolts) and reinstall seat. The swap takes less than 10 minutes.

Great idea.

Still rolling in Southern Oregon

Re: Top Case Gone

I removed the top case, it helped with the stopping control.

I have a Sena headset for my helmet, the radio isn't a draw for me.

I also had my boots resoled with Vibram soft soles, it gives me a bit of height as well as better grip on the pavement.

The biggest difference for me was probably the 'low seat'. It is about 2" narrower and 1" lower. I get better leverage with my butt closer to the ground.

I am 5' 9", 180 lbs with a 32" inseam.

Re: Top Case Gone

Since my wife has back issues that's why I took it off. She doesn't ride anymore. Took a 200 mile round trip ride with my Patriot Guard buddies, down MO 125 to the Peel Ferry in Arkansas ,Friday. Lots of hills and curves and it has a much better acceleration and goes in and out of the curves quicker. Had to get used to that. I like it. The floorboards I installed limits my lean a little and the AirHawk R cushion works fine too. Day started out misty and in the hi 40's. Ended up 5 hours later in the mid 50's. Nice ride.

Re: Top Case Gone

Dang I'm 5'6" 150 with a 30 " inseam - just forked out $1300.00 for custom fitted seats and working on lowering the whole bike. only with the bike loaded and wife on can I can flat foot the bike - but need to raise it so it handles when loaded.

I took mine off and replaced with ft worth rack.. i miss the top box for easy access to tuing i need on gas stops, i gave done severalniron butts with the box on and just did one with out, and id say i prefer the top box on these rides, i also pulled a trailer on all my iron butt rides, , i dont relly see a difference in handling , there is a diffence on the amount of air hitting your back and different windshield positions, not sure about my preference on that,, i have not ride the bike much with out trailer since i took boxx off.

Re: Top Case Gone

Top case was removed when I got my LT. I mostly ride alone, but I really enjoy having the storage space, so the top case went back on. Never did ride it with the case off, so I can't attest to any ride or handling differences.

Exactly what I did to my LT and loved it. On trips it was better for me to have the rack and the rear seat as I could haul lots more stuff in 40l and 50l bags.

Also a bit lower profile so handling was improved.

Re: Top Case Gone

Top case in storage...feels a lot lighter, especially under 10 mph. I still dropped it though. 5'10...220 lbs...benchpress 180, but my legs must need more work. I think the trick is never have the front tire at anything but straight ahead. I've thought about changing bikes, but after replacing exhaust with carbon fiber (less weight), and 4K more of expensive mods...I think I'm "married" to Old Silver now...

Re: Top Case Gone

Bought the Ft. Worth rack and installed on my LT....and I will go on record now and say that the top case will never go back. Can't believe how much of a difference it made in the handling of the bike especially at slower speeds.

It also make a difference when you go on extended trips. This past summer took a 5 week tour of the New England states and packed up 2 dry bags and a small collapsible cooler and away I went. The 2 dry bags and cooler weight just over what the top case weighs on it's own.

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know 'why' I look this way.

Re: Top Case Gone

Like this? The first thing I do is delete the back seat. If aftermarket is available, if not, I'll make something or modify something to fit.

Re: Top Case Gone

Its one thing to remove the top box. Its another thing to remove the rear seat too. I think you get a different bike at that point. I want to remove the top box but I find it to be very convenient to store my helmet in it when Im away from the bike. I wish the side boxes were big enough to store a helmet like the side boxes on my Triumph Sprint.

I have my helmet (Schuberth C3, size L) stored in the side box right now with no problems.

Oh and if anyone has a FW or similar rack for sale, I'm all ears

My HJC full face in size large fits fine in my bags. Just have to orient it correctly.
