K1200LT First Ride Impression

Well, the transporter finally delivered my 2002 KLT. I spent the morning cleaning her up and inspecting for obvious problem areas (damage, leaks, etc..). After finding no problems, I inflated the tires to the prescribed 42F/48R and took her for a spin.

All I can say is Whoa! What a difference from my R1200GS (of course!). I have been so used to riding a tall, 500lb. bike, that it took awhile to get accustomed to the LT's size and heft. I didn't expect to feel so "out of sorts" since I have owned several other large, heavy bikes prior, but I did!

I consider myself a good rider but on the 12GS I was so used to making very small inputs to move (especially with it's light front end) and I quickly found out that it takes some direct and sure inputs to get the LT to move as effectively.

My whole purpose for buying the LT was to have two different riding experiences to enjoy. I sure have that. Once I have "mastered" the LT and gotten used to it's characteristics, I think I will have what I was looking for. Right now I feel like I'm a novice riding his first bike!

I dropped it off at BMW of Denver so they can inspect it, change the oil, install a new front tire and add a few farkles I got for her. I also removed the rear trunk and installed a Ft. Worth rack which I'm sure will change the LT's dynamics some.

A couple of months ago I went the other way, added an R1150GS to my '00LT. As you mentioned, they are very different but both great.
Now that the weather is getting colder, I really appreciate the protection provided by the LT. Yesterday I got caught in a down pour and and was thinking that it wasn't really raining all that hard. Then I came into town and had to stop! I was instantly soaked. Gotta keep moving to stay dry.
Sure do like the GS on dirt roads though. With the LT I was doing a lot of turning around because the road was deteriorating. With the GS I can now expore those long hidden by ways.
You'll love 'em both.

When you get it, just be careful. You could think you are just changing lanes and end up making a hard turn!

Would like to see ur ride with the trunk removed

Good luck Im sure your going to love it. There definatly is an adjustment period Be careful that its in gear when shes parked. At parking lot speeds while turning pay attention.Ive learned these things the hard way. Most of us here have dropped the beast.I would love to see what the LT looks like with the trunk removed, any chance you could either post or email a pic ?

Greetings Mike.

Just a word of warning. In your initial post, the last paragraph started with the words " I dropped it"... Us LT owners are very wary of those words.

Get ready to join our club sooner or later. hehehe... You'll work out what I mean.

Ride safe my friend and enjoy your magnificant Bavarian machine.

Kindest regards to all.

Thumbs up I'm about to go the other way as well

I test rode an 2006 R1150 GSA and a R1200 GS two months ago. I'm now interested in a R1200 GS Adventure. While I haven't ridden the 12GSA, I can interrpolate --a very nimble machine. Very rugged and baaad looking.

Thanks for affirming my perception that the two bikes have a very different ride. It'll help me keep a straight face when selling my wife on the purpose of having two bikes.

Regards,
John

...to me. I rode through on a Thursday night at 10PM (I-25) this summer. The cage drivers were weaving in and out in bumper-to-bumper traffic at 80mph in a 55mph (maybe 65) zone! I tried to slow down and almost got rear-ended. I only say this because I've been wondering how the Denver motorcycle riders perceive their riding environment.

To put my comment into perspective, I hate the ABQ city traffic as well, but it's not quite as intimidating.

Regards,
John

Well, as I was told, the LT handles much differently without the trunk. Just took a short ride on her before the "weather" moved in.

Looks like I have the bike (and the different experience) I was wanting!

After the "weather" moved in...

Ft. Worth rack...

Corbin driver and passenger to come...

Hi from the UK.

Any chance someone could give me a URL link so I can learn more about this Ft. Worth rack and where it can be purchased.

Great looking bike.
