Squealing Noise Starting about 2500 rpm

I am on the road right now, and just started having a squeal something like a loose belt. It starts about 2500 rpm in each gear and goes away when revs drop. Any one else have anything similar happen? Alternator/mounts? Any thoughts?

I had a 2002 LT and I don't recall any belts. The only thing I can think of is the water pump. Look for blue fluid. I can dropbox you a PDF manual for the LT. Its 54 meg

+1 on what Axle said not sure how long you can go before you remedy it before the bearing goes and damages the input shaft. Patric can maybe help as his did damage the shaft as well as the front case bearing pocket. I was able to re-machine the pocket. You can confirm by pulling in the clutch once it is squealing as it usually stops with that if it is the bearing.

Re: Squealing Noise Starting about 2500 rpm

Yes , a squealing sound is not good. I have had the front input shaft bearing go out ... twice.

The first time it didn't have any sound, but the clutch started slipping a little going up a hill. It did had some gear oil come out the hole I put in the bell housing. I was 100 miles from home, and thought I could nurse it home. It made it like half way, & the gear box ate itself.

We were in Florida at our trailer there for the winter the second time the gear box went. That time it made a squeal when we were taking off from a stop. I thought it was the slave cylinder piston spinning in the bore... I have heard on Adventure Rider web sight that a slave cylinder sometimes will do that when it goes bad.. We parked it for the winter that year, as if it was the slave cylinder it was not going to last too long. When we got home I took it apart to find the input shaft was kind of flopping around. jzeiler helped me out big time by repairing my gear box.

It might be posable the rubber the the drive shaft could be letting go , & it might make a squeal. But I can't think of a squeal a k1200LT can make that was a good thing.. I hope you make out OK.

Re: Squealing Noise Starting about 2500 rpm

First, thanks to all who replied. I was able to get the bike as far as Calgary after some further diagnoses to eliminate the possibility of it being the transmission input shaft. Further investigation by the kind people at Anderwerks narrowed the location of the sound to the area of the timing chain cover and identified some excessive rattling as well. Long story short, the piston assembly pushing on the cam chain tensioner had stuck in the compressed position and was no longer tensioning at all. The spring was not broken, there was some marking on the side of the tensioner piston, and the bore of the tensioner showed some wear. Installation of a used low(er) mileage tensioner cured the noise I was hearing. Sorry for the delay in replying, but I wasn't having any luck posting a reply from my mobile device.

Now, to find some new tires before the trip continues.

Re: Squealing Noise Starting about 2500 rpm

How many miles is on your bike? BMW recommends changing the cam tensioner at 60k miles even though everyone says that it would go 150k with no noticeable wear.

Re: Squealing Noise Starting about 2500 rpm

The bike is approaching 220,000 km., which I believe to be getting close to 140,000 miles. The bike has been dealer serviced, and generally they have done a good job. Something was changed around the 195,000 km mark, although I think it may have been just the liner on the cam chain tensioner rail. I will post a more accurate answer when I get home and get a chance to check the service records.
