Reconditioning 2002 LT..

I got my self a GS R1150 to ride this year so I'm putting the LT on the lift and plan to meander through the following items....

Oil / filter
Air filter
New Brakes
Spiegler Brake lines
new Rear shock
new Front Shock
Canistorectomy
Add John Performance chip
Brown wire check... (Do I need this if I add the performance chip?)
Check the weep hole existence, add if not.
Remove radiator and find where that loose bolt goes....
Radiator flush
check the valve clearance
New plugs and wires

Paint it... (getting bored with Anthracite silver)
New seats

Does anyone have anything else I should do while I have her torn down?

Thanks!

-Preston

Re: Reconditioning 2002 LT..

You could add a new fuel filter to your list and also replace the flexible lines inside the tank. Take a look from up front over the engine and see if there is any oil on the top indicating the breather tube is shot and needs to be replaced either with stock or by one you can make in several different ways. Check, clean and lube the shift linkage.

If you are really looking to check things out, you could pull the FD and swing arm to check the pivot bearings and replace the front if bad and lube the rear needle bearings, short of doing any clutch or transmission seal work or the dreaded O-ring replacement.

The '02 models can benefit from the speedo accuracy mod and newer throttle cables. Recommend doing the cables, at least

Lube the splines of the drive shaft.
Replace the gearbox and fd oil
Flush the clutch lever fluid
Flush the rear shock adjuster fluid

Re: Reconditioning 2002 LT..

Sounds like you're going to be pretty busy for a while!

I would also replace the plastic quick disconnects on the external fuel lines if they haven't been already.

It might be a good idea to also install the Fix-It-Before-It-Breaks top case latch if they are still available, as these are prone to break and replacing the broken stock unit with another poorly designed stock unit for several hundred dollars is poor economics. There was a recent thread on this about a month ago. I installed one on my '07 several years ago as a preventative measure and have seen several LTs on eBay for sale with broken latches (you can see the upper corner(s) broken off in their pictures).

Enjoy!

I figure by the time I'm done between the price of the GS I just bought, and the parts I've purchased I will be in to this for the cost of a newer Used LT, but I'll know exactly what I have, no mysteries under the tupperware. I'll have two bikes and not one (in reality 5 not 4 ... I've got a great wife ), and be way under the cost of a GTL... Plus I'm sure more than a few tasks on this list will force me to grow as a person.

There is an enormous value in knowing the state of your bike and what all the things are under that nice shiny exterior. After all I have done, I have much more confidence in my bike and myself riding it.

If I tried a project like that, the clutch would go out two weeks after I finished.

Re: Reconditioning 2002 LT..

So this thought is weighing heavy on my... Should I go ahead and do the clutch plate while I have this thing torn down? I haven't noticed any slipping, it has around 85k on the odometer.

Thanks for the input.
