2009 K1200LT Front wheel wobble and warp

Good afternoon!
I am new to the forum and have had my K1200LT for 3 yrs now. I am hoping to find someone on here to help me shed some light on a current issue I am having. When I purchased my bike it had 10,000 mi on it. Riding it home from VA to MD I felt a wobble in the front end at about 40 mph and bumpiness as I increased speed. I had it inspected when I got home and the rubber on the front tire had uneven wear and had bumps in the middle of the tire. I had them put on new Bridgestone Battlax's for both front and rear tires. Now, 9,000 miles later I am having the same issue with the front end. Does this sound like something else is starting to give out? Front shock maybe? Looking for help, thanks for reading.

I think you are close to the life expectancy of the tire. The number of miles you will get off this tire changes based on how you ride it and inflation pressure. Uneven ware on the front tire after 9000 miles is not unusual. I have had it on my F800GT and on the LT.

Use a ME 880 up front and you double that mileage.
Wobbling can be uneven wear of front and/or rear tire. Noise is created from scuping of the front tire but this is no problem. Will go away when you change tires.

+1 on the metz up front. I get 13-14K on them and I use the BT-020 on the rear good for 8 k.

Re: 2009 K1200LT Front wheel wobble and warp

My 2000 has 158K, and has only run metzlers. I typically get 12-14K and change front and back at the same time-easier to make one trip to the shop.
This last trip however, first time my tires didn't perform as well as other times. Typical Metzler noise, which I can live with, but several thousand less miles. both tires seemed to wear unevenly, which was the first time it's happened to the bike. Trip was 10,300 miles, and thought I'd be fine.

Special shout out to Mac's Cycle in Clarkson, Idaho. They had a rear tire, mounted it in minutes, and only delayed our 48 state/12 day ride by less than one hour. Wish they were closer to WI.

Never tried Bridgestone or other brands. I'll give this new set of Metzler another try this season

Re: 2009 K1200LT Front wheel wobble and warp

I run Metz Marathon 880 reinforced.

They do last about 20-22k km. I believe is the tire with the best mileage.

At the end of its life, the front tire will cup, and get bumpy in the middle.
Also, the tire, at least in my case, gets worn more in the left side. Due to the camber of the road.

The LT, at least the 2004+ models, will do a tank slapper/wobble if you let go of the handlebars at less than 80kph.
It gets more pronounced with tire wear, and with improper tire inflation.

The previous model was not affected as much.
I think they changed the rake to make the bike easier to turn, with the problem of the wobble.

BMW's classic solution: "do not let go of the handlebars".

The problem is unfixable. I've already put a HyperPro adjustable progressive steering damper to no avail.

Hope this helps.

Re: 2009 K1200LT Front wheel wobble and warp

I have a 2005 LT with a Wilburs front shock. No wobble hands off at any speed, new front tire or worn.

I have a 2007 LT with a stock shock. Violent, ever-increasing tank-slapper at about 30-45 with old Metz, steady and smooth above that. With a new Metz, wobble that gets pretty concerning but stabilizes before tank-slapper in a shorter range, maybe 35-40.

Only difference between the bikes, besides 17,000 vs 70,000, is the Wilbur's shock. Can't say that is what makes the difference but I suspect it is. If I didn't have an old boat and a lovely wife, I'd have a Wilburs on the 07 before now.

Hermit,

You are probably the only one I know that has some inkling at what the problem could be.

My LT only has 42K km (26K mi), so it might be awhile (or not) to replace the front shock.

Since I know the slapper tendency is there, I never let go of the handlebars, but it's definitively bothersome.
