Question Top Case light wiring help

2000 LT. I have the Clymers Manual and the diagram seems to show the light inside the top case and the power socket on the left front of the case should only have power with the ignition switch on. My light is always hot and the socket has no power. Is My diagram correct?

Sounds like two problems.
As for the socket, it sounds like possibly an open circuit. Look for a loose connector or a blown 15A fuse.
The map light according to my schematic, is on Fuse Box #2, fuse#8 and should be switched at the ignition. I'd pull that fuse and see if it kills the map light just to verify where it's feed is coming from. Maybe a prior owner has re-wired it?

Actually, I just found that on a different schematic both items are shown on the same fuse (box2/fuse8), so while I can't explain why the map light is always hot, maybe the power port is disconnected somewhere in the top case.

Re: Top Case light wiring help

I believe that the light is always hot, at least on the earlier LT's. Some folks were having issues with the light not going out and draining their battery. I do not know if it was a bad micro switch or the position the light switch is in when one closes the topcase. I never had any issues with my 2000 LT except for the mirror tabs breaking.

Ditto on both on fuse F8. The diagram (BMW Factory) does not show the kill switch for the top case light but there is one. Look at the hinges. F8 should only be hot in "on" and R. So it is like switched power except it is hot in the R position (think accessory).

Re: Top Case light wiring help

Thanks to all.
My diagram does show both on same fuse and hot with switch on. I see know evidence of a switch to cut the light off with the top closed. I will pull the case and check it out. PO must have changed something.

Re: Top Case light wiring help

There may be a switch on the light itself just like the dash light.

On my 2000 K12 there is a button switch on the left side of the right hinge top case. Close the trunk and the light goes out.

Re: Top Case light wiring help

Yes I know there is a switch on the light itself.

I had heard mention of a switch like on a car door but I will look closer tomorrow. Now I have a new top case problem but will start another thread.

K1200LT -99. Top case light and the power socket is always hot (as well as radio) but turning ignition key to steering lock position inactivates those. Easy to test
