Rear Drive Preventative Maintenance?

Just bought a 2002 KLT and I am having it shipped directly to BMW of Denver from the seller.

I am going to have them go over the bike (it only has 9500 miles, 600 and 6K services have been done by the prior owner).

I want them to service the final drive, too. Is there any preventative maintenance I should have them do on the FD (outside of changing the fluid)?

Mike

Have them put in the RedLine Shockproof Heavy. It calms, cools, and soothes. Pepto-Bismol for the gears.

Nope, just new fluid and a few prayers now and again if you have a mind to.

Seems like the late manufacture date on the 2002's and on have a better record of rear drive failure. Like from 7/02 on. Seems I read that somewhere on this site.

Just for my piece of mind I will have them give it the "once over" and change the oil/filter and FD fluid. No worries.

Thanks

I was thinking that if he had the 6k done at the dealer that its dealer maintained, You can still have them look the bike over for safety reasons. You will need to do serviceing again in 3k. I would check the date of the 6k service. 6 months or less you'll be fine. The Lt is a very dependable bike and usually uses very little if any oil.
You could even invite some of the local Lt riders over for a meet and greet and they will be happy to show you around the bike.

I asked at BMW of Denver if the 6K includes a final drive inspection/renew fluid and was told no.

So just for the sake of doing it, I will have them inspect, drain and put in fresh fluid.

I owned a couple of K1200RS's (a '98 and an '03) and am familiar with the "brick" and it's performance. I have been a pretty active member of the ADVriders and the i-BMW.com K-group and look forward to meeting and participating with KLT'ers.

Thanks,

Mike
