Salvage titles and recalls

I bought my 05 K1200lt with a prior salvage title. Has 6800 miles on it. I called the dealer to check for recalls and the VIN gives a fault code. Dealer was nice but thought the bike may have come from Canada so it wasn't in their system. Paid the $40 for a Carfax to discover the bike was purchased in 04 and had damage in 05 in New York but wasn't a salvage title. It came to Iowa and had a clean title until 2011. The previous owner claims when the guy he bought it from transferred title they slapped the prior salvage on it then. The Carfax doesn't tell me if the bike came through Canada or US. So does the prior salvage title affect the recalls? Just wondering!

Re: Salvage titles and recalls

what recalls? and at that age and no history, not in the system I doubt they would be honored. but I don't know the answer to your question

If indeed this K1200LT was for the Canadian market it will show a few differences from a USA specs model that you can check.

1) USA specs model have a charcoal-canister located under top-case (trunk). See yellow arrow in 1st picture.

2) USA specs model have a tank-pulse-vent-valve attached near fuel-rail on left side of engine. See yellow arrow in 2nd picture. Also, all that plumbing around the pulse valve is missing.

3) Canada specs model do not have all the stuff mentioned above AND they have a speedo in Km/hour.

Because a previous owner could have modified all items above after the import, you can ALSO VERY EASILY check the last 7 digits of VIN. This will tell you if it was a bike for Europe/Canada (same specs). Use this web site and scroll down into the result page: you will see in OPTIONS lower section the wording "Canada" if your assumption is correct.

Re: Salvage titles and recalls

Thanks for the info - that will help. I went to the link and didn't see the word Canada anywhere. My last digits are: ZL70045. It isn't a big deal - I wanted some history on the bike.

Re: Salvage titles and recalls

RealOEM give the build date and source. Does it for the cars as well. The only recall that I recall was for the alarm system not operating correctly in the cold. VIN sequence ZL65023 to ZL70402. Looks like yours was in the field. You can check by looking at the alarm unit per the picture. There were no other significant recalls on the 05 model.

Re: Salvage titles and recalls

I have a 2005 K12S with salvage history. I just had 4 recalls taken care of a couple of weeks ago, so salvage should not affect recalls.
Maybe the recall has already been preformed?
