Re: Broken trunk latch Poll...

Funny, I've been reading every old thread about trunk latches over the past 2 days. Posts go way back (2005). I don't want any problems so I just ordered the "Fix-it-Before-it-Breaks" billet internals. Seams like that product was developed right here on this forum.

I also plan to file and polish the hooks that engage the lid. I liked the post saying they just leave it un-latched, I checked out that idea today in the garage, the lid is heavy enough for sure!

Waiting to see your fix. Make it purdy.

I have five friends who have owned or still own a K1200LT; mine makes six. None have ever had a broken trunk latch, or even know anyone who has.

Re: Broken trunk latch Poll...

I put the FIBIB kit on 5 years ago and do not worry anymore. The latch most likely will never brake if the latch user is aware of the issue and uses caution, putting downward pressure on the lid while closing the latch gently and not forcing it. The problem comes in when the other person,"wife" isn't as aware. I gave my co-pilot responsibility to make sure the trunk was latched before she gets on the bike. I knew if I didn't make the latch bullet proof even though I alerted her to its fragile nature she would try to close the lid with the purse strap, hoody, scarf or myriad of girl accessories sandwiched in the trunk lid. So if you are the only one shutting the lid and know to push the lid down while closing and treating the handle as if it is made of nitroglycerin you should be all right.

Let your conscience be your guide.

Re: Broken trunk latch Poll...

I've been wondering how likely mine is to break, being as how the latch works smoothly and I take care to not let anything flop into the lid seal. I also pull down slightly on the lid before carefully closing the latch. What method are you guys using to polish the hooks? That would be cheap insurance.

2005/ over 90K miles

It would be nice to know the failure rate and if the only ones breaking had stiff operation or from accidental cargo-related impingement.

Mine broke on the left side and the latch pin is worn half way through. Right side, no such wear.

Yeah, I bought my 1999 with a broken latch at the top right corner.

Didn't vote as I was not the one to brake it.

Go ahead and vote Nikos. I think he is looking to see if it was mostly the left and not the right that broke. John can correct me if I am incorrect in that assumption.

Re: Broken trunk latch Poll...

When I bought my '07 in '12, after reading all of the horror stories about breaking/broken latches, I pulled the plug and installed the Fix-It-Before-It-Breaks kit. I envisioned having it break miles from home and wanted to pre-empt that from happening. I am still careful when shutting it, applying downward pressure on the top case rack.

Re: Broken trunk latch Poll...

Way back in 1999 the latch broke on the right side. It was replaced by the dealer under warranty. Since the history back then was usually the right side I simply removed the locking pin on that side from the lower half of the case. No more problems nor worries and the remaining left side pin kept the top securely locked. It's simple fix that will most likely work on all LT's. Cheep too!

Mine was grooved on the drivers right side when I bought it two seasons ago, broke shortly after that. The next year, the left broke and I bought the replacement latch milled from aircraft aluminum. Price was high but I am a toolmaker and I saw it was very well designed replacement so I paid the man. No regrets so far.
