2006, 137,000 KM

Hi all,

Well I joined up and was going to ask about buying this 2006 LT with 137,000 KM on it but have since spent some time in here reading the posts. What a great site! I currently bought a 2014 Concours 14 last year (new off the showroom floor) and was a big mistake. Very uncomfortable. Only put 4500KM on it last season. Over the winter months, I've been obsessing over what to do and with riding season here in Canada coming up, my obsession has grown to DAILY research.

In the past few weeks, I have gone from "customize the existing bike" to "buy a BMW or Gold Wing" about 5x now. Currently there is a 2006 K1200LT with 137,000KM on it available. I've been trying to decide if I should trade for it or not. Looks like brand new.

In my travels here, I've learned that asking the question would just result in the same answers from previous posts... check the service records, etc, etc. What I have not been able to discern is, what is the average life of this bike? Is it near EoL or half way? Again, depends on way to many variables to answer. There are no easy answers I guess.

At this point, I am second guessing everything one day and all in the next day. Wish I could just go riding. I'm gonna hangout here until I make a decision. If anyone has some advice, its greatly appreciated.

137,000 KM is about 85,000 miles here. These motors have no problem going 150,000 miles or 240,000 KM more.

That being said if you have access to records on oil changes and valve adjustments you will have a better idea on condition.

Thank you very much. I put in an e-mail to the BMW Sales guy this morning asking just that. We'll see. Today, I just want to "DO IT" - lol

FWIW Don Arthur totaled his on the way to the Iron Butt Rally several years ago and he had 304,000 miles on it. Yeah they last a while.

Wine at the sales guy, tell him you are worried about the "high" mileage. Maybe get a better deal.

The LT is a solid machine. That mileage isn't bad at all if it's been well cared for and the price is right. If suspect that if someone was riding it that much they were maintaining it.

Out of curiosity, what your complaint with the Concours? Most of the guys I know that ride them rave about them and it was high on my list when I bought my LT. I never test rode one though, it only took one test ride on the LT to sell me on it.

Thank you very much for the comment. That's what I was thinking. In addition, the bike doesn't have a scratch on it anywhere. It looks very well cared for.

Only complaints I have about the Concours:
  1. the mirrors are totally useless/dangerous
  2. noise / buffeting from the windshield
  3. not comfortable over 200 KM
  4. the biggest issue: my ol'lady is not comfortable on the back at all. sliding fwd, etc.
  5. The Kawasaki lrg. trunk and backrest I added is constantly bouncing/vibrating and hitting her in the back unless we're on a very smooth stretch.
  6. the heat from the engine is insane on a nice day riding around. Sometimes so hot on my legs I have to stop and take a break.
  7. after last season, I hurt my neck and now have a pinched nerve. I can't lean fwd without my fingers/arms going numb and tingling. If I sit up straight, I'm fine.

I feel that Kawasaki created a sport touring bike without much thought on touring. Oh and steering is VERY heavy as well. Other than those things, the performance is awesome!

I know a lot of those can be remedied and I have been looking at that as an option but a few changes puts me up close to $2000.

I paid $16,000 for it. This 2006 BMW is $8000.. of course, those prices are CDN

First of all you came to the right place if you are looking to research the LT. I have a 2007 LT and love it . Ride two up 95% of the time and it is the most accommodating and comfortable machine I have owned for that purpose and I have tried most of them. The 2006 your are looking at has a lot of mileage so it should be had for cheap, good condition or not. People get rid of bikes mainly for two reasons, something is going wrong with the machine or their ready to move on to some thing else. Unfortunately people and dealerships are not always truthful about the things they know are wrong with the bikes. It is imperative to determine whether something is going wrong with the perspective bike. I can't stress enough the importance of complete maintenance records when purchasing one of these bikes. Make sure if the show you the records that you actually read them to make sure all the require maintenance was performed at the correct intervals. They will last forever if maintained, but if not they can cause you a nightmare. Granted when buying a used bike you will have certain items that need attention. You do not want those items to be a clutch, leaking seals, ABS unit failure, failing FD unit or other items that will require a major tear down and re-build. Even If your are a mechanic and can do this work you still need to understand what you may be getting yourself into by really investigating the bike thoroughly. There are plenty of LT's out there. Don't let your excitement of getting a new machine cloud your judgement and ability to do the proper due diligence.
