Top Case Latch Handle

Anyone have their top case latch handle metal break? The latch continues to operate normally. How difficult is it to replace the handle?

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Common failure. There is a guy that makes a "fix it after it breaks" and a "fix it before it breaks" kits. See here . There is no part available from BMW just the bottom half of the top case.

Unfortunately, the only replacement from BMW is buying the entire case.

Here is a link to someone who actually made billet aluminum latch replacements. If he still has any, you can get one from him. I will be checking myself as my latch is broken just like yours.

Ouch, looks like I get to purchase the more expensive "fix it after it breaks" kit. Anyone have experience installing the kit? Was it a straightforward installation?

Had to replace to mine. It's better than the original equipment. Instructions are included. I remember there was an issue with the instructions, at least for me and I can't remember what specifically but I was able to figure it out.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Another option is to buy a used case that already has the aftermarket latch. My top case went to pieces in a few ways. The latch went first but I was able to repair it with epoxy and metal body lath, that continued to stay working fine for years through the additional failures. Then the little plastic knob screw that holds the strap broke. Then the mirror broke off. And finally the left hinge broke completely away pulling a chunk of case with it. Others have repaired this with epoxy too.

But I found a complete case on ebay that had the aftermarket latch with key, a top rack, included the speakers and pad, everything inside was completely intact for $260 shipped. Color doesn't match but I really don't care, I won't but it could be painted.

I felt the "Ouch" factor but for spending $150 for a latch that wasn't even broken. And you get to shell out more for the fix it after it breaks kit. What I can say is it is a very well designed and CNC machined kit that works perfectly. Bring More Wallet!

I purchased the "Fix it before it Breaks" Money well spent on either option. This guy makes quality products. You might hurry as he has limited supply.

I have only had my 2000 LT since September. It is fairly low mileage but as a money saving preventative measure I just today ordered the "fix it before it breaks" kit. Extensive explanation and instructions on the website. Look like a great idea.

You should be happy with it. I found that the easiest way to install it was to take the top case off so I didn't have to try to work on it at an odd, upside down angle. I assume the Fix-It-After-It-Breaks (your bank), is to also work on it off the bike.

As easy as it is to remove the top case I intend to do it on a padded work bench. I don't bend so easy anymore.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

I just bought a 2003 K1200LT with 23,000 miles. It's pristine except for the busted latch. The bike hasn't even been delivered yet.

The dealer threw in the bottom half of a "take-off" top case (Titan Silver) with an intact latch so I could swap it. I have ordered a billet replacement latch instead so the extra case is now for sale if anyone is interested.

I've still got the original handle off my '06 LT if you just want the handle. I proactively replaced it with the billet version.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

I put on the fix it before it breaks kit 6 years ago and it works flawless. If the wife can't break it the way she slams the handle down then it has been "tough tested". For those who have not fixed the latch, you better be very gentle when closing or get the fix it kit because it will probably break sooner or later.
Good Luck

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

RealWing generously sent me the old latch from his LT. I have the top case off, but I'm scratching my head as to how to remove my broken latch and replace it. I didn't see a reference to the latching mechanism in my Clymers manual. Anyone have pictures or a thread on replacing the latch?

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Never mind guys. I found instructions on the lttrunklatch.com (Fix It Before It Breaks) site. For the procrastinators, it is somewhat of a bear to tear the entire latch apart to repair after it breaks. Spend your hard earned money now and purchase the much less expensive and less time consuming Fix It Before It Breaks kit. I wish I did as I spent a Sunday afternoon repairing the latch.

Installed my "before it breaks kit" today. Do it on a bench upside down and don't fight it. Amazed at the quality and impressed by the solution. Worked perfectly.

I don't know guys. I see that the LT first hand owners were caught suckers from mama BMW. They paid so much money to buy a "reliable" BMW LT that had many failures to come. I consider myself just a bit lucky as I bought her second hand used and I believe my next buy is gonna be "get rid of the big LT and go for a Honda". At least they don't break so much as the "reliable" very very expensive BMWs.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Hondas have a reputation for reliability, but a 15 year old Honda will also have its share of mechanical issues. In my opinion, the LT issues you refer too are a result of an aging fleet of K1200LTs. In a lot of cases on the forum, the LT is on its third owner (sometimes more), and the current owner has little data how the previous owners cared for the LT. I expect mechanical issues to arise, and a latch that breaks after 15 years of use is okay by me.

I'm a relatively new LT owner who also owns Hondas, Harleys, Yamahas, and other BMWs. Browsing through this forum gives the impression that there are a lot of problems with LTs, but many of them are quite minor, and relatively easy to fix.

When I bought my LT, it needed the latch repair, the mirror hinge in the trunk repair, the stereo amplifiers repaired, new brake lines, and tires. At 14 years old and 48,000 miles, it may need some clutch work in the near future. I paid $3000 for my LT, and have put less than $1000 into all of the repairs to date by doing them myself. I now have a premium tourer for under $4000, which I hardly consider "expensive".

Enjoy your Honda. They make a fine motorcycle, too. But all motorcycles need maintenance and repairs from time to time.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Over the years I have "fixed" many things on my 2000 K1200LT Icon that were not broken.
Cannister"ectomy", replaced clutch slave, drilled bell housing weep hole, replaced original brake lines, etc.

I also added the "fix it before it breaks" trunk latch kit some years ago.
I found it to be a well engineered and fabricated product.
I used to be tenative when closing the truck packed full of riding gear; with the reinforcement affored by the "fix it before it breaks" kit, no more worries. Recommended product.

I wonder if anyone has installed the before it breaks kit after it broke and used it as part of their repair. It is less expensive than the replacement latch so wondering if anyone has tried this and either succeeded or failed.

He closed up shop and all stock is now gone as of last month. Used or Ebay, dealer or some ingenious repair of your own are the only ways to go.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Check out my post from April 26th 2016. Titled: How to post pictures. Have a latch solution.. Start at J Zeilers posting at #13. That's where the Pictures start..I've come up with a solution for fixing the dreaded cracked latch plate by using panel bond. It has been used by GM for over 30 years. I caught mine when the crack first appeared. Basically. I made a facsimile copy plate to go over the top of the original latch. Mines been on there for almost 2 years. it's solid as can be. I still take care when closing it but. Check out the original post as I said. All the details are there. I believe at this point. I may have the only viable solution left.

Re: Top Case Latch Handle

Thank you for the link to photos of your latch idea. I am going to get some of the glue and a plate to cover the handle. I got some aluminum yesterday and I am going to make a block to support the inside of the handle. I suspect the engineer did not understand how the forces apply as well as I do. It looks to me that the majority of the force is from the release of the handle and it shocks the aluminum. eventually a crack was generated. I will add photos as I go along the process.
