Question oil

I was wondering what oil every one uses in their bikes. I was going to do my first oil change with mobile one and wonder if there are any problems with a full synthetic I have a 2002 k1200lt with 26000 miles on it. Thank you for all of the help in the past with the canister and tires both answerers right on the money.

There have been so many threads on this and the answer to your question is...no one seems to do the same thing here. Different oils, change cycles, when to go to synthetic, not to go to synthetic, etc., etc., etc. Do a search and you will find many, many differing opinions on oil. There were so many arguments about this for a while they banned oil threads! Oil seems to bring out the passion in people.

what I am going to do

I can only tell you what I am going to do! I am going to use Amsoil 20W50 full synthetic for V-twins. The reason is that I have 12 quarts left over from my other bike. However, from what I have been able to tell, almost any Synthetic oil, particularly Mobile 1 or Amsoil, whether for V Twins or their regular Synthetic, will work just fine, and meet BMW's specifications. I know Mobile 1 is sold in 15W50 and they have a Motorcyle oil that is 20W50. Amsoil just sells 20W50, one for motorcycles and one not formulated for motorcycles. BMW's synethic oil is 15W50. jrlakin

I use what Dave used in his engine, which made it to about 100K before he totaled his bike, Castrol 20W50.

But it locally, and I web buy BMW oil filters at a discount.

I don,t really have an opinion on oil, don't know much about the stuff. But the extra virgin gives me and my LT heatburn. LOL I prefer the Amsoil, go figure.Amsoil does sell a 10/40W oil. http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mcf.aspx

Thanks Everyone

I enjoyed the humor i'm going for the extra virgin olive oil. I ask only because I put mobile 1 in my 1990 honda shadow and the clutch slipped for three months so I guess synthetic is not a problem with the bmw the honda has a wet clutch.

Would Rotella T 5W-40 semi-synthetic be OK to use? I use it in my diesel Jettas, and it's reasonably cheap.

Cool My $.02

I have to admit that before the LT I had ONE simple philosophy on oil, buy cheap and change often. I would buy the Wally world brand for 78 cents a quart and put in my truck. I ran it 3500 to 4000 miles, and changed religiously. I did that on all three of my trucks and every one of them were running fine, and no engine leaks or probs well over 100K on all and one was nearly 200k.

Enter the LT. I ran Mobil 1 15/50 synthetic to about 4K and got scared. I would change it. I read plenty about what 'others' were doing, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Then something snapped (or likely the price of gas and oil really sank in). I NEVER really concerned myself with the environment becuause one of my buddies burns the stuff to heat his auto shop. He had to pass EPA inspection to get licensed for the waste oil and burning it.

I'll cut to the chase. Now I STILL run Mobil 1 Synthetic 15/50. I'll run it to around 6K but NEVER over. I change ALL of my oils tranny, engine, and final all at the same interval.

Thus far, I haven't had any problems EXCEPT a failed rear bearing. I made one mistake, I changed my own rule. I have always used Mobil oils all the way around in the bike. This particular trip, O'Rielly's was out, so I bought Lucas for the final drive. After all it says is meets or exceeds any 90 weight.

400 miles later she was sitting in the repair bay getting the final drive bearing replaced. The mechanic says that there's no way to prove it was the Lucas, but I KNOW. I changed my pattern, and it bit me in the but and wallet.

Get a rhythm and stick with it!

That's all I got to say about that!

StLHeadake - actually there might be a way to see if the Lucas oil was at fault. Have a used oil analysis performed. It can tell if the oil sheared to a lower viscosity, see if the proper additives were present at correct levels, etc. If the oil did not perform, then Lucas should pay for repairs.
