Travel/Trip Insurance for NZ trip?

Hi all,

I'm planning a New Zealand trip with my girlfriend at the end of the year. Will fly there, rent a bike (R1200 RT) and go on self-guided (12 day) tour (arranged by a motorcycle tour operator there).

I looked at AIG Travel Guard and their policy covers costs associated with travel-related-but-not-in-my-control stuff (like missed connections, lost bags, airline goes out of business). It also covers medical/death/dismemberment costs (not much, but I have my own medical/dental insurance).

I can also add "cancel for any reason" coverage which reimburses 50% of costs associated with me cancelling the trip regardless of reason.

Have any of you done overseas/expensive trips and did you buy trip/travel insurance for any part of it?

Thanks in advance.

Chris, when we went to Morocco we used the trip insurance for the flight from the airline. When we rented the bikes I wanted to be able to walk away without a problem so I bought that insurance from the tour company. I do like to err on the side of caution. It all depends upon the cost and if you can stand it for the peace of mind. The medical flight home insurance is also a possibility although New Zealand is a modern country. If I had a problem there i'd just call my cousin but not everyone has that option.

We've moto-toured in France and New Zealand, and non-moto trips in the UK and France. I've never felt the trip cancellation or medical evacuation insurance was worth the price. If I was adventure touring in South America I might spring for medical evacuation, but not in New Zealand.

Re: Travel/Trip Insurance for NZ trip?

Each and every country (almost) might have their own rules and coverage of mandatory (&voluntary liability) insurances. So better check from local bike rental company their recommendation. Local rules apply as for damages and insurances in traffic. General health, baggage & other insurances are easier. I just heard an (almost) horror story of one US Citizen getting really sick in Finland. He had no travel insurance and ended up to intensive care unit here in Finland. Well of course everybody are taken care here if they need help but the bill might be "humongous". That fellow was saved by some rule defining "sudden accident or injury" being covered by the "governmental agreements" between US & Finland (or something like that). But if somebody had decided that ending up to that ICU was caused by old sickness (which it IRL was he had already before arriving Finland) he would have got a bill of ~50000€ for the ICU treatment of several days. So the learning is

- have travel insurance covering all health issues
- check the coverage of traffic insurances in the target country
- all other is peanuts...

Born to be wild so why not

Re: Travel/Trip Insurance for NZ trip?

Thanks for all of the input. Found a policy from USAA that was (a) cheaper than the first one I found and (b) covered more situations that would cause me to cancel or miss my trip.

I'm looking forward to the trip, but man is it pricey!
