1999 won't start

My 99 won't start. I have charged the battery (less than 1 yr) for two days, and have the charger on. When I turn the key on, I do not hear the fuel pump run. This problem began when I tried to start the bike with a very low battery with a boost. The starter relay does not engage. I have jiggled the reverse switch, side stand is up, bike is in neutral, yet no love.

I thought perhaps bypassing the alarm system might be the thing to do, but my alarm system does not have a thirteen pin connector beneath the box, and I can;t find instructions for bypassing the alarm on the forum. The fact that I don't hear the fuel pump makes me think that it is not the immobilizer.

Also, the headlight does not dim when I hit the start switch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Read thru the second thread that is listed below your post in the 'similar thread' items. Includes a pic of the possible/probable loose connection point. HTH.

Re: 1999 won't start

Headlight on no problem with key on, so the load shed relay ground issue is likely not the culprit. Any other thoughts?

Again, no sound of fuel pump, headlight does not dim when I push the start button.

Yup. check the fuses.
I seem to remember that the windshield raise and lower is on the same fuse?

Fuses are all good. I hadn't thought to check them, so thanks.

Re: 1999 won't start

how did you charge the battery? out of the bike, or in? If you took it out, you might check to see if all the wires are connected, sometimes when you put the battery in, one of the wires gets bent down, and you forget to fish it out and put it on the terminal....don't ask how I came up with this....Or have you tried to push start the bike? Not something you can do yourself, but I have had very good luck push starting mine when my battery was at the end of it's life, and was giving me problems. of course a new battery fixed it. Oh, you have an alarm on your '99? I have a 2000, and don't have one...that I know of..
Does your brake light wig wag when you turn the key on? reverse switch is not engaged? Kick stand is not down? kill switch is not on? did you accidently reverse the leads on the "boost" when you were trying to start it? do you have 12v to 14v on the battery? how long had the battery been dead when you tried to start the bike?

Re: 1999 won't start

I am curious, other than a hellacious current through your battery leads, what would happen if you reversed the leads in a boost?

Re: 1999 won't start

you would most likely melt the wiring loom, fry the ecu and other terrible nasty's, would be quite expensive I would imagine. I don't suggest trying it to find out.

It would be interesting to hear what happens! So if someone wants to try - please report here all the damages

The battery might explode... Happened to the spouse of a co-worker and he lost an eye due to the acid burns on his face...
Always be extremely careful when jump starting a vehicle, and when in doubt don't let another person connect the jump cables.

What it does is create a 24 volt surge to short in a 12 volt sytem. Batteries can explode, alternators fry, wires melt and with high amperage batteries people die. Don't do it!

Red face Re: 1999 won't start

If the bike turns over like normal but doesn't try to run you might have the issue I had.
Under the fuel tank is the electronics box which is where there are about 7 relays. Move the horn relay into the fuel pump relay slot and see if you hear the fuel pump. You can also put the fuel relay in the horn slot and try the horn. On my '08 those relays are the same.
If the relay is the issue, open it and make sure the flap moves over and makes good contact.
JohnZ found that was my problem and he now has a spare after bending the contact flap.
