I have a 2001 Lt with a tall c bailey windshield. Which it great untill it rain then I can't see a thing. I have tried rain x with no effect my only option is standing on the pegs. Which gets very tiring after a few miles. Any thoughts ???

Be careful with the RainX, as I recall it says not to use it on plastic

Not trying to hijack this thread but are you the Erik Elmgren that went to SFA in Nacogdoches?

Painters tape, a pencil, a saber saw, cut it, if you can live with a shorter screen.

Re: help i can't see

It sounds too high if you have to look through it (though that's just my opinion, you may prefer shield that high.) Be *very* careful if you do choose to cut it though. I used a saber saw with some pretty good teeth. It all went very well until the last moment when I turned it around to finish from the opposite direction then it kinda "jumped" on me and sent a crack through the plastic. I was *so* bummed. Salvaged it with a torch to seal the crack and still use it, but I'd have preferred not to have the crack.

Long story short, I'd use a finer tooth blade next time and possibly a jig saw instead of a saber saw.

But, with the exception of that, cutting it was very easy. Tape the heck out of it as recommended. I used the Euro profile from my short shield and it turned out to be an awesome shape.

Rain-X is bad for some plastics. I lower my windshield in the rain so that I can look over it. And get enough wind blast to keep my helmet shield clear.

Re: help i can't see

Yeah the shield is too tall the po must have been way over 6 foot even at it's lowest it's an inch and a half too tall. I would try to cut it but I'm sure that would be a disaster. Guess I'll have to live with it

Re: help i can't see

tape it up use a felt pen and a steel tape measure to draw the line and use an angle grinder with the fine cutting blade, it will go through like butter.. just take it down in stages until you are happy

It is very easy, I used a fine tooth blade on a jig saw (saber saw?) at high speed, a little edge sanding and a torch (optional) to bring the clear smooth edge back. The angle grinder sounds even easier with no chance of cracking it.

Re: help i can't see

Before selling it, you might be able to just trade it with another forum member. I'd give that a try before making a cut.

As others have said, in the rain, for me, most of the time, I can see a lot better just through the face-plate of the helmet. The rain seems to splatter away, if I'm going fast enough. Too many wet layers really does restrict vision.

Re: help i can't see

You really should have the option of looking well over the top if you want and also be able to raise it so you are looking through it. I had a tall and was looking basically just over the edge, the edge would obstruct vision sometimes. When I raised it I was looking way down through it and backdraft would splash water on the inside of it. I cut about 3" off and now I am looking well over the top getting better airflow in all conditions and when I raise it I am looking probably 4+ inches down into it good for cold nights and only a little backdraft.

Cutting it is a nice project but you MUST protect the surface against the bottom of the saw. Also a little acetone on a clothed fingertip puts a super smooth translucent finish on the edge. I cut it mounted on the bike.

I have an older stock shield that I would trade for the cee bailey. PM me if you are interested. My shield is in pretty good condition but not pristine. But you could lower it with rain conditions.

Re: help i can't see

I have a pretty short windshield that I took off a 2005 LT. If it will fit your bike send me a message and I will send you the exact height and you can decide if it will work for you. I replaced it with a taller windshield on my bike because I felt it was too short.

I cut 2 inches of my C Bailey windshield with a Dremel and sanded the edge with sand paper. You would never know it was cut.

Some guys on my last forum site for Triumphs cut their windshields and then reattched the cutoff portion with small spacers to make a laminal lip to get better wind protection. Just saying

Re: help i can't see

I taped mine off then used a simple compass that I got from CVS drew my line and then with a thin grinding wheel on my dremal tool just kept going over the line until it was cut through and then a sanding pad that I had from home depot and finished it off, its actually pretty easy and made a huge difference in my ability to see over it if I really want to look through it i can always just raise it
SO if I can do it i would think anyone can

Reading this thread got Me to thinking...

A couple of years ago, I ordered a Cee Baily's #1 standard windshield for the LT in stock 24" height (thinking that I would like it).

After riding with it for a short while, I realized that it didn't agree with me. The top of the shield was right at eye level, & when it was raised, I felt like I was looking through a fish bowl.

So I'm Thinkin....It's been awhile....the windshield must have depreciated a little.....why not go ahead & make the cut. After all, it's only the first cut that's really difficult.

So I've tried my best to emulate the drawing of 440MM Euro, as seen in the Max BMW fiche.

I think it came out Ok.
Ill attach some photos.

Re: help i can't see

No. Don't use rain X. If anything. I'd try a straight carnauba or Brazilian wax on it .Like S100. I have a 20" Cee Bailey shield, that's what I would do. Of course clean and polish it with Novus 1 or the polish Cee Baileys recommends. Or. Cut it down like others have done.

Gee isn't that the reason BMW put an adjustable wind screen on the LT? Up for protection (I use it to keep bugs out of my coffee cup in the morning) and down for visibility and airflow??? does that c bailey have a flashing red light on top to warn low flying aircraft when you have it all the way up???
