Question fuel-economy gage failure SI 18/2005

Hello everyone, a new LT driver here. My first post and I already got a question.

Last week I bought a 2005 K1200LT with 4800km on it, all seems to work fine just the fuel consumption indicator in the BC always gives the maximum value (15L/100km) and because of this also the indicated range ofcourse isn't correct.
If I reset the fuel consumption it immediatly goes back up to 14,9 or 15L/100Km, I already found that it seems to be a known error by BMW, and that there is a service information about it SI 18/2005.

So does anyone here have an idea what this SI says, or how to fix this problem?

Regards,
Koen

Not sure about that notice but I see nothing related at this site.

There are a few signals that feed the BC for fuel consumption. Pin 26, signal TKVA from the ECU and the fuel level input from the tank gage. Also signal TacoA which is related to RPM.

I do remember seeing a post about this but it has been a few years and I did not capture the info.

Thanks Jzeiler, you were correct, I've found a post from BeemerLT about it in the archives, and it seems it has something to do with the TKVA signal coming from the ECU.

(20) Service Bulletin No.: 13 001 05 (022)
Date: March 2005
Subject: Econometer reading is incorrect
Details: See this post. K1200LT: applicable up to VIN ZL 72203.
Solution: Remove tank to access electronics box. Install harness containing 'filter': one wire to ground terminal in electronics box; other wire 'piggy-backed' to pin #26 Motronic wire.
Note: The Service Information Bulletin calls for dealer to use a Scotchlok connector for piggy-back connection. These connectors are unreliable (see this thread). Try to get your dealer to solder the connection or use a good quality butt connector.
Re: Technical Service Bulletins - Summary

Problem is I can't seem to find more informotion about the "filter" they talk about, anyone here remembers this problem and hopefully the solution?

Koen

Ok, just found some more info about it, now if I could only find what the "small add-in wire harness" contains or if there is a BMW part number for it.

A post from mneblett from the archieves.

This is a *sure* sign you need the early-05 fix -- had to do it on mine, which had exactly the same problem -- 16 mpg.

There was a mid-production change in the wiring and computer links, and one part of BMW's engineering dept. wasn't talking to the other.

The fix requires access to the electrical box, which means tupperware and tank removal.

Pics show the small add-in wire harness -- a couple wires, one of which plugs into ground point, another which solder/taps into one of the Moronic wires (pin 26). There's a small black electronic device in one of the wires which fixes the signal to the BC computer.

I remember that now and I can't find the PN either but still looking. Hard to tell what it is from the picture Mark posted.
