FINAL CHAPTER< FINAL DRIVE

Today I picked up my 2000 LT from Milwaukee BMW with a brand new final drive.

The bike has 135 K miles, here is the history.

First failure, 93 K. BMW repaired, I paid
Second failure, 103 K, in Denver, they fixed, they paid
Third failure, 120 K, Milwaukee fixed, they paid
Fourth failure, 135 K, Oct 7. Towed it to Milwaukee BMW and after many conversations, explanations about what this has meant, they agreed to cover the cost of a new final drive. It did take nearly 3 months, and I was stranded and lost the last part of the season of riding. I was frustrated in every call I had to initiate. But I do have a completely new part, again with guarantee for two more years.

So, sort of happy, pleased that come spring, I should be ready to ride without too much fear.

Thanks to Victor at Milwaukee BMW-he has a thankless job trying to keep customers happy and dealership and BMW mothership happy. I think he did his best for me.

I hope this is the last post I make about final drives, and the next post is from Colorado after the next 100,000 ft ride.

Sounds like you should have had one of your drives rebuilt by one of our resident experts. Unfortunately, your experience with dealer rebuilds indicate that they really don't know how to properly set them up.

You are so right-in hindsight, and even if anything happens, it will be sent to Saddleman as quick as it comes off the bike!

It is not that the dealers don't know how to properly rebuild the drives, they do. But often they just keep costs lower than a new drive by just replacing the big bearing. The time it takes to do it correctly would make the rebuild just as expensive as a new drive. So lets not bash the dealers too bad now.

Hope you get 100 k or better out of that one.

John, you are so right. I tried to reason with them with that very argument, that BMW didn't give them the support to do it right. When I told them at this rate, I'd see them every year, and if they did it right the first time it would have been cheaper. I was polite, took my time, and this ended up ok for me. I do support the dealer. In fact, took my sons bike (also an LT) to pick up mine and left it to do a repair.

I got mine rebuilt by forum member (Dave) Saddle man. I know its done right and will likely last the life of the bike. At least my life with it. But in your case.At least the dealer is doing his part to rectify your problem.

Yep. I watched one of the BMW techs "rebuild" a FD on the bike. He threw in a new crown bearing and put it back together. draw your own conclusions as to how he set it up on the tolerances.
