2000 LT Preventative Maintenance

I ride 2000LT with 65,00 miles or 110,000 km on it. Rebuilt the clutch and the final drive this year. Looking for a winter project. Wondering what to tackle next. Any suggestions as to what I might tackle given the age and mileage?

How about replacing the brake lines.

Good idea. The original lines must be getting brittle. I was thinking about the seal at the transmission and also wondering about the forks. They have never been touched. Is it better to leave them alone or prudent to replace or rebuild them?

Re: 2000 LT Preventative Maintenance

I always leave the seals alone in the tranny unless they are leaking. +1 on the brake lines. sportbiketrackgear.com has the Speiglers in colors for $234. Just ordered a set for a friends bike.

Brake lines for sure. You will like the Speiglers. Like John said I wouldn't mess with the transmission but would from time to time pull the boot of the rear drive to see if there has been leakage down the "rear fork". The front forks? I'd maybe keep the seals and a new set of wipers on hand (and some fork oil or ATF) in case they started leaking. It is a pretty easy job to do (especially with John's dental floss trick to get air out of the tube, brilliant to be exact). I'd add to your list to go over the bike and just tighten bolts. Check your front and rear motor mount bolts for sure. Those get neglected and you can rid yourself of some buzzy vibration when they are tight.

Have fun!

Re: 2000 LT Preventative Maintenance

+1 on the linkage... Mine apparently allowed the linkage to back off and disconnect. Not having seen this mentioned in the forums I elected to have the ol girl towed to the dealer. Took em a week to get around to it, and it took relatively little time to repair. This looks to be fairly easy to address, and may be easily overlooked as periodic maintenance. I'll leave it in someone else's capable hands to discuss the how-to.
