Re: Light bulb types ????

The LT 99-2003 use an H7 for low beam and H3 for high beam. On the facelift (2004-2009) the High beam is an H9.

Attached are all the other bulb specs.

John, you amaze me! every time someone has a question you have the answer including part #s , manuals and pictures to show what they are looking for or at. You must be very organized. I'm nominating you in for MVP of this site......... at least for this year. There are several more who would make the nominations and probably deserve a MVP also.

Thanks, but I have been collecting info on the LT for over 10 years now. Some was garnered first hand and some was absorbed from others that went before me. My BMW folder contains 15.4 GB of data in 2,787 files and 297 subfolders.

I would be happy with the basics fixed (fuel QDs, viton crank o-ring, FD, trunk latch, etc.) and two performance mods:
1. A low compression turbocharged engine. Then I can run the cheap gas in Newfoundland without pinging on every hill (that was a scary tank of gas), yet have performance when needed and when high octane is available.
2. A wider ratio gear box with a lower first and higher 5th. A touring bike with an 8,000 rpm redline, doesn't need a close ratio gear box.

So, John, when will you have the prototype running? Maybe a partnership with Saddleman...

Re: Light bulb types ????

The problem with the motor in the LT is that it lacks a knock sensor, the 4 cylinder in my Fusion is high compression, runs extremely lean - 40 mpg on the highway, manual tranny, like all modern motors smooth and quiet. The fuel injection the same design but the software is most likely more advanced

All the BMW new designed engines (or re-worked engines) that came out after 2004 now have knock sensors so you can run cheap gaz when this is all you have. This includes R1200xx (from 2005) and all "slant-4" and "slant-6" engines (K1200S, K1300S, K1300GT, K1600..)

Given that the K1200LT was at the end of its life, and given certain limitations of Motronic 2.4, I doubt it was worth it when they they did the last major facelift of K1200LT (late 2004).

I agree a knock sensor is required as well, but a turbo is still the way to go.

And, unless you have a hybrid Fusion, the compression ratio is quite a bit less than the LT's 10.8:1.

BMW was very late to the game in this regard. Cars have had knock sensors since the 70s.

I just read this post & I'm impressed John. I never thought of having a folder on the LT. Everything I know about the LT is in my head & we all know what happens when we get older with that kind of old style memory storage.

Re: Light bulb types ????

Hi Roland,
Probably best to start a new thread but ...

Please give a little more information on the problem. Is this something that has always worked and just stopped ?
If so, what has changed ?
You know the starter motor works and the bike starts.
You know the start button works for the same reason.
You know the reverse selector is working as the reverse light comes on.

I hope this is not a daft question, but the engine is running when you press the start button ?

More information may provide some meaningful responses.

Regards

Tony

Re: Light bulb types ????

Okay youre right a bit more info, its a 99 Klt, everything seems to be ok

i own the bike now for 2 months and everything on the bike works, BUT i was under the impression that the motor should not be running because a running motor and pressing the starter button is not always a good idea.

Please explain me what the right procedure is of letting the bike run backwards (reverse), regards from a newb, Roland.

Re: Light bulb types ????

In order for reverse to work, the bike must be running, in neutral, and the knob rotated to reverse. Then pressing the starter button will slowly back you up.

Yes, the starter motor is the reverse motor. The engine only provides electricity for this operation.

Re: Light bulb types ????

No worries about damage as the over run clutch for starter to engine prevents any coupling to the engine during the reverse operation.

The engine should be on and there should be an increase in RPM when you push the button to reverse. It should reverse as long as you hold the button down.

If it stops after a few feet then there is speed sensor on the reverse gears that is malfunctioning.

Has anyone found an LED bulb for the 04-09 that they're happy with? I've always felt the high beam is anemic. I have HID low beam which is awesome but HID in the high beam takes too long to warm up for a "high beam flash". Wondering about LEDs...

Re: Light bulb types ????

I've been doing some research and I don't think LEDs are there yet to replace standard bulbs for headlights. Some new cars are coming out with LED headlamps but those are specifically designed as LED - not a replacement bulb put in.

Like you, I am hoping for an LED replacement but I have a feeling we have a few years to wait. Probably have an easier time if someone came out with a replacement headlamp unit for the LT that was designed with LEDs. Of course I can imagine what that price tag would be!
