I just joined the club that I didn't want to join...

Nice day yesterday, but I'm in a hurry to get to work. Only 1 minute into the ride I realize that I've left my garage door open, so I zip back home and close it. To get out of my driveway I need to turn around. This involves reversing left onto some fall leaf covered grass on a steep downhill.

I think you can see where this is going.

The bike got away from me a little, I put my feet down, slip on the leaves, and in slow motion, down she goes onto her right side - the downhill side. There's an awful sound of breaking plastic, which was the separating of my right mirror from the housing as it split across each pin and into the housing. The motor ran for maybe 2 seconds as I frantically got to the kill switch and shut it down.

And I learned for the first time, even with the "walk it up" method, this thing is HEAVY.

So, yes I'm stupid for rushing, yes I paid the price, and yes I've done probably at least a mirrors' worth of damage to my pride and joy, if not more. I've heard it said that there are those that have dropped their K1200LT, and those that will. I am now one of those that has. Bummer....

The bike did start fine, no smoke etc, but I'm traveling for 2 weeks so I can't get into it to see what else my stupidity has cause. Brakes all seemed to work, handlebars looked ok - I think the fact the grass was soft and wet might have helped....

Been there, done that (more than once ). Hope you didn't hurt yourself. First time I pulled a hamstring trying to stop it. After that I just let 'er go.

Your not a true seasoned LT rider until you drop her. Done it three times in six years. Only slightly bent shifter once. BMW new this heavy girl would like dirt naps because the fall protection they designed works really well.
Good Luck with your fix.

Re: I just joined the club that I didn't want to join...

I think I've got two drops out of the way so far. After realizing how well the bike handled the first one, when it came to it the second one was easy and beat blowing out a knee or something trying to stop it.

Now I'm well prepared for the third (or fourth, and so on...)

Re: I just joined the club that I didn't want to join...

Back in 2008 I had my bike for just 1 week. Similar story to yours, leaving for work I realized I forgot to take out the trash on trash day. Had only pulled out of the garage, but stopped the bike, got off and walked back to the garage...5-10 steps in I hear CRASH..."Oh F"...learned that day to always leave it in gear, esp on a downhill slope.

Several years later, I gave my wife permission to mount while at the same time I was messing with my helmet instead of holding the handle bars. She steps on the passenger peg and over we go. Learned that day to pay attention to "her" more .

Re: I just joined the club that I didn't want to join...

It must be the week for joining the "those that will" club. I had my first drop on Sunday in the garage. I've only owned her seven months. I just returned from a great three day ride and was putting her up on the center stand. My boot slipped when she was half way up and over she went. She was a beast to upright.

Well you did good lasting 7 months for a nap. My 1st was 3 days and 57 miles into ownership. I was turning from a side street onto a busy main street, started out & stopped to re-check traffic was clear with the front wheel turned, and was surprised how it threw itself sideways. There I was with the bike in the street, pulled leg muscle, feeling like a fool and no idea how to pick the beast up correctly. Luckily a passerby helped me. I then learned to put my butt against the seat and walk backwards to right it and it got easy from then on.

Reckon you'll have gotten off lightly Rowie, especially on grass... plastic is cheap (although not on a beemer... ). Plastifix or similar ABS plastic repair kits and JB Weld will fix many small problems if you have to.. or don't want to buy a replacement part.

The LT's been over too many times... was putting my GT onto centre-stand (manual method) at petrol station a couple of weeks ago to fill up... boot slipped off the sidestand peg just as I started to pull up on the handle... I'd stepped in oil or petrol on the driveway... I literally threw the bike sideways into the petrol pump

Re: I just joined the club that I didn't want to join...

I'd agree - it's good you weren't hurt, and you got off relatively easily/cheaply. The grass was a good thing in this instance.

For some reason, my LT has only fallen to the right. Maybe I'm due (overdue?) for a left-side fall sometime. It's been several years so maybe I've learned something.

Thanks for sharing your stories guys. It made me feel a bit better about a subject that I'm still a bit annoyed at myself for...!! I've owned this bike for 4 years so based on what has been said, I've had a good run...!

Thanks again.

Do some searching and you'll find one or more very lengthy threads where others describe how/where/when they have dropped their LT. Lots of good advice on how to avoid it, or minimize the risk.
