final drive?

Ok, I know there probably isn't a more frequently asked question; but I'm wondering what the signs are of a failing final drive?

The previous owner told me that the final drive had been refurbished by a local BMW shop (I believe I have the receipt) less than a thousand miles prior to my purchase. Since then I've put about 5,000 miles on the bike.

I'm starting to notice a vibration that feels like maybe a tire that is out of balance, but I only notice it at low speeds. I decided to check out the final drive lube, and found gray matter on the magnetic portion of the drain plug which cannot be a good sign?

I purchased the bike for the primary purpose of a touring trip my wife, and I plan to take in Sept.. We plan to cover 5-7k miles.

What should I check/do concerning this matter?

Also, is Mobil 1 75W-90 LS which exceeds API, and GL-5 a satisfactory lubricant for the final drive?

Thanks so much! Dale

Re: final drive?

Gray slime on the magnet is perfectly normal gear wear and it will taper off after several thousands of miles. The shiny stuff is what you have to look out for. If it is a Metzeler 880 on the rear I'll bet that is what you are feeling. Especially if it has over 3,000 miles on the tire.

Be aware though that most BMW shops do not measure when they do a re-build and often just re-install the same shims that were in there before. Since the consensus here is the drives were over shimmed then this one will fail again down the road.

And yes that oil is just fine. Go and enjoy the trip but be aware if you have 5K on the rear tire already it will not last another 7 K unless you are a very meek rider. Most only get 6-9 K on a rear on the LT.

I like the way you think!

I do indeed have a Metzler 880 with somewhere around 5-7k miles wear on the rear. I plan to switch to a pilot 3 before our trip.

The buildup was slime, I inspected it pretty thoroughly and found no shiny shavings.

My biggest concern is that with the bike in gear, and running on the centerstand it looks as though the center lug bolt is moving erratically. I originally suspected a bad crown bearing, but I suppose it could be that the tire being presumably out of round is causing movement of the swing arm...

Pilot 3 is not rated for the LT. I don't think it has the REINF label.

Re: final drive?

I don't believe the Pilot 3 is available in a tire rated for the LT at least I could not find one. 160/70 17 79V Reinf Metzeler, Bridgestone and Avon.

Wasn't aware of that. I'll have to check with the guy that does my tires. He recommended them. He works at the bmw dealership in service part time, and said he uses them on his Honda 1300 st.

I just assumed he knew what I needed. I guess we all know what happens with assumptions. ..
