Front End Wobble

My 05 LT with 2000 miles has a very pronounced handlebar wobble at 30-40 mph. If I take my hands off the bars (I know this should never be done) the bars wobble violently. The wobble disappears at higher speeds. I am also not sure if I feel a subtle movement in the bars when turning at very slow speed (5 mph). Tire pressure is good and there is no sign of any abnormality even at 100 mph.

Here is a long thread on the topic that should help. Feel free to PM me after you read it and I'll be glad to share the entire ordeal I went through if you think you can stand it .

Bottom line is, yep, many of them do that. Opinions vary as to why but I am convinced it is most always the tire. I would not believe it at first but for my 05 that is what it ended up being.

Check your front tire.

Fortunately, my '02 never had this problem. After a recent 1,200-mile ride through some serious twisties, I noticed a slight handlebar vibration and more noise than normal. Then at a gas stop I noticed extreme tire wear, just down to the cords in one spot.

Fortunately, I was 10 miles from a local Yamaha shop that was not only open on a Sunday afternoon, but had the front BT020 in stock (at internet prices even) and a mechanic on hand to mount it. Just over an hour later I was back on the road, and the bike felt just fine.

Next time I'll change before the trip, instead of planning on doing it after.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...
