Question Fuel Guage Reading

Just had a dealer tell me that a guage reading between the white section and the red section of the guage is ok for the tank to be empty.

The only reason I bring this up, is that on my 99 LT and my 03 LT both read empty at the bottom of the red, and after my 03's last dealer visit/service, it now reads as shown above.

What do the rest of the LT's out there read at empty?

What a line of bull...

Mine's runs WAY below the red, and I've yet to ever run it completely out of gas.

I really don't have a gauge to speak of.....but on the RID it'll read somewhere between 60 and 80 miles left, when the yellow light comes on. When it gets lower.....the "miles left" will go blank. If I get to a gas station right away, I can usually put about 5.7 back in. Leaves me with about .8 gallons still left inside I think. I believe I did get 6.1 in there once though.

My understanding is that the fuel light comes on with approx 1.06 gallons left.
The milage shown on the computer will vary when the yellow light comes on based on how you drive and whether or not you have been updating the computer. If you've been running at 80 mph it will come on at a lower milage remaining than if you were running at 55mph. The milage screen on the computer should go to 3 bars at approx 9.5 miles. I also believe there is a way to adjust the fuel gauge to the computer if they do not coincide. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I can chime in. By the way my owners manual states the fuel tank holds 6.34 gal (02 model).

Garage
Fuel reading

Had the dealer recalibrate mine twice and it would not read correctly.
Had to replace the sending unit in the fuel tank. I had the dealer calibrate the red line to have 1 gallon of fuel left.... It works now. I fill up with 5.3 - 5.5 gallons.

I have never run mine to empty. I just had some work done at the dealer. When I got the bike back the gauge didn't work. The needle was laying at the bottom of the red mark. Riding it I have only had the gauge to about the top of the red mark a time or two. It seems like it only held a little more than 5 gallons then.

yep that is BS
That is the point were the reserve is supposed to start and your low fuel warning comes on. Empty is the bottom of the red (or lower).

Red face Fuel Guage.

After many discussions, dealer is finally going to bat for me. Ordered new console under warranty, since this occured while bike was still under original BMW warranty, and it had been documented.

Just get to start back at Zero miles though,

Hey, I got a bike to sell ye, low miles....Grin.

Hi Bob - Glad to hear they're stepping up and taking care of this for you. I'll be interested to hear about the discussions that took place to get it.

Smile Fuel guage Saga.

Thought I would let Y'all know, Finally got the fuel guage installed and it did not take a whole console, (Don't have to start at Zero miles again) Fixed the issue, now the needle sits about a needles thickness above the empty pin on the guage when tank is empty, Good enough. Nice being able to trust the guage again.

Bob's A happy camper......for now...grin.

Re: Fuel Guage Reading

I ran My 03ltc out of gas when the gauge read over 1/4 tank. no warning light came on. After some talk with the service manager he said to look at the sending unit. My sending unit was distorted. I just crinkled the beer can caliber sending unit until the float would move freely reinstalled it now it work fine.

Re: Fuel Guage Reading

Two out of the five guys I ride with have had fuel gauge issues on their BMWs. Neither is an LT. I sometimes fill up my LT and the gauge will go to full almost immediately, other times it can take 10 minutes or more to reach full. It seems like the fuel level system on BMW motorcycles is up there with the final drive engineering.
