Question running bad

Hey All;

I have an issue and just started troubleshooting. I have been doing extensive searching in the help section and cant find my exact issue.
Specifics: 2002 LT, 285,000 miles. ALL maintenance completed thru out like clock work.
have not done the last one for 5000.
Trouble all of a Sudden. Starts ok but rough, have to keep the throttle up and then stills runs like crap. Sounds like an old volk. bug. like a missing a cylinder. No power, mpg dropped by 50%. She will go 80 with no sputtering, give here little throttle and its like a bus uphill against the wind. (0-60 in 15 seconds)!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does not get better after warmed up, maybe slight.
Here is my list to check. Fuel filter & Lines, coil pack & wires(need help checking primary), injectors & wires.
Checked the plugs, ok. Maybe coil not giving full voltage. Would the filter/hoses give me those symptoms? No overheating, no funny RPMs. No warning lights.

45 years riding and still more places to see.

I would touch a wet finger to each header pipe to see if you have a dead cylinder. If all are equally warm that gives you a clue.

And try to find a GS-911 to check for codes.

Michael - sounds like a prime candidate for a GS-911 checkup. Might also think about O2sensor - what's its maintenance history? Stand by for the gurus!

If it was my LT acting that way, the first thing I'd do is check for swirling fuel in the tank.
Hope you find the culprit.

Bought used K1200LT number 3. This one is green/teal with 31,369(now 7/29/2018 54,143) miles and is an '02. The first 2 bikes made it to near 150,000 miles.

Due to heart health, the Dr says not to ride under 40 degree air temp. Ugh! Now it is harder to get my 18000 miles a year in just in the summer. Guess that stopped my 20 degree rides now.

Already on the SE forum to see if someone has one, no luck so far.

I will check the pipes, but no loud ticking or clanking.
But check the simple things first

Thats also what I heard. I checked in the tank with a light.
When I turn the key on I get very slight movement then nothing. Could be just the pump coming on. But I think a fuel filter change never hurts either.

I agree, hope someone in S. Florida can help.
maintenance history?. is as it should be. pretty much by the book. 285k miles no real issues except wearout items. had an alternator go out at 218 and did the clutch while there. Never had anything that would alarm me. I'm a pretty good mechanic, electrical only fair.
Would an O2 sensor cause symptoms thruout with 50% less MPG? 42>25
all nice gurus are more than welcome.
Can always learn something new.

I meant just the maintenance history on the O2 sensor. I don't know if all your symptoms sound related to a bad sensor, butt wouldn't surprise me.
Used to be we had a GS-911 registry thread here on the site - if you can find that, it might lead you to an owner willing to help. Good luck.

oops, so sorry, The O2 sensor, been awhile at least 2 yrs. cheap to do. Bosch from the auto store. I have the time to check and replace stuff. but would rather TS. Would the GS911 pick an bad O2 up? Didnt know about the registry. Where is that, under technical?

O2 sensors should go about 60Kmiles, I would think.
That is a BIG drop in gas mileage. Maybe plugged cat converter?

My vote is the O2 sensor. Oh and by the way you have been vindicated Zeke. People are now pulling the fuel pump out with the tank on the bike! Hope you find the fix soon.

Back to basics: Replace spark plugs. I recently had a missing/surging problem, and before throwing a bunch of $ at it, decided to replace the plugs. Runs perfect, the old plugs were looking a bit bedraggled! Not exactly a cheap fix, $12 apiece, but a quick fix.

Ok,, I will be picking up an O2 sensor. Wont hurt either way.
I NEED to get myself a GS911. Saves me alot of time, especially with my high miles.
The 300$ price tag is worth it in the long run.

I've had my GS-911 for a couple or three years now and it has never seen a code. However, it is worth the money just to know that! And I have done the bleed test twice now after brake fluid flushes. That savings alone has paid for the unit.

Ok;

Pulled the 02 sensor, have to pick up a new one. Dont have a torch handy, but its at least two years old, which for me is about 60k.

How can I check the coil, the wires all show over 6k.
Not very electrical, go slow. lol

No real way to evaluate an O2 senor with a multimeter. The Lambda tracking with a GS-911 will tell you a lot. If it was bad you will notice an immediate improvement upon replacement. Also a flaky fuel pump relay can cause intermittent pump operation which can lead to crappy running as well. Not real common but it has been seen here before.

I may be mistaken, but simply unplugging the O2 sensor can give you some idea of where you're at. Unplugging it would likely force it to go with the default temperature fuel map. Just an idea.

I had to replace the coil pack when 1/2 went bad. Your description sounds like what happened to me. I had cold pipes on two cylinders and that was a dead giveaway. I used a cheap Harbor Freight IR thermometer instead of my finger.

If only one cylinder is cold check that cylinder's compression, injector, plug and wire, valve train and cam.

If all cylinders are similar check the hose in the tank and the O2 sensor

This could be a leak in the hose dropping the fuel pressure and causing a bad mixture.

I,m in uk, Scotland I had similar problem last month mines is an 03 lt with only 13k with history I could not get hold of a gs911 so I got o2 lambda sensor had problems changing it, but hey ho new ones made made huge difference back to 50 plus mpg , when it was playing up it was flooding and throwing out unsused fuel from exhaust, one sign was when I unplugged it, there was no difference in running, good luck stay safe
when changing it damn thing was solid had get exhaust off and heat it but hey ho going brill now

ok;

Progress is being made. I found #1 wire open, completely open, other 3 at 6k. One problem to be fixed.
installing new O2 sensor tomorrow and replacing coil and all wires.
Looks like the wire was the main issue, the rest is just preventive.
will let you know if that was it.

Original clutch, alternator AND final drive went over 200K?

In the last 2 years...

I think that's pretty common for a BMW as long as they are maintained and not abused. My old man had several BMW motos through the 70's and 80's and pushed more than a few of them past the 200K mark with none of these items failing (I think he replaced diodes a couple times); one was the R75/5 in my profile pic, wish I had that bike today - good memories

yep just replaced the coil set couple days ago.. the alternator went out at 218k, you have to drop the engine anyways so i did the clutch while there. still had about 1mm of meat left before min wear. And the FD is original.
