Trunk strap hinge control thing-a-mabober

Sorry for the repost.
The strap that keeps the trunk from opening to far has come off the pin. The strap is wound up in the roller. How do I fix?
I had seen the thred for this a while back but cant find it.

Red face

The same thing happened to me on my first day of ownership. Welcome to the club.

I think you can find the previous post in the Archive section if you do a search in the old forum.

I just grabbed the strap with a pair of needle nose pliers and then riveted the loop back on the loose end. I'm assuming the same thing happened to yours. I didn't think my spring had unwound too far because it worked well for a couple of weeks. Now the spring won't rewind the strap so I'm going to buy a replacement sometime soon. For now the strap holds the top for me and it doesn't get in the way.

If you do replace the whole mechanism I am pretty sure that I read you need to drill out one rivet and pivot the old one out of the way and then rivet the new one into the first whole. Then you can drill out the second rivet and rotate the new piece into place and put the second rivet in. I think there is a backing plate that isn't accessible and if you drill both rivets the backing plate will fall out of position and then you can't get it.

OK everyone, this is my first post that resembles an answer to someone's question. Did I get that correct or is the answer completely wrong.

I went and found this old thread. http://www.bmwlt.net/ubbthreads/show...w=&sb=&o=&vc=1

Kevin,

You did just fine. Especially the technique for NOT losing the backing plate. Well done. That is the kind of spirit that makes this board great!!!
