Sudden Change - Running Rough at Start

I rode my 2007 K1200GT on Thursday and it was a smooth as glass.

On Friday morning, I went to start it up, and it had a hard time turning over. Eventually it started, but it ran loud and rough. There was considerable shaking at low RPM, still present if I revved the engine slightly, but much reduced. I drove the car that day.

This morning, the bike starts and runs, but still does not sound or feel right.

The bike did this once before, months ago, and the problem went away on its own, not coming back until today.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Something definitely is not right.

Don't know anything about your car but it sounds similar to how my wife's car was acting last spring. The problem was the ignition wiring, every time it was damp the car ran like shit, when the weather warmed up it ran great.

Re: Sudden Change - Running Rough at Start

Given your location, unless a heavy dew was obvious, I wouldn't be suspecting bad wires as readily as I would in other places, especially since its not a common issue with BMW bikes (many cages that have this problem have lousy wiring routing and the ignition arcs through the insulation to a too close grounded part)

Hard starts and rough running can have many causes and you will just have to go at it systematically to find this one- or live with it if its not usual.
Bad stick coils, fuel issues, switch issues, etc are all other possibles.

Re: Sudden Change - Running Rough at Start

Thanks for the input. The first thing I tried was adding Techron to the fuel, and the problem seems to have cleared up again.

At this point, I am thinking either bad fuel, or the cam chain tensioner not filling with oil right away sometimes.
