Smile Recall

I received notice from BMW Motorrad in today's mail that a safety recall is in effective for some 2005-2012 R, K, S and HP2 bikes. The recall is for the fuel pump flange that may cause fuel leakage. Parts are not yet available, but further instructions will be provided by snail mail when they are. I called my local dealer today and they were not aware.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Recall

I got my recall notice in the mail yesterday as well. Why is it that I'm not surprised our local dealer is NOT aware of said recall? I'll call today and see about schedule but I'm sure it will be some time in the future. Wonder if it would be worth the ride north to a different dealer? By the way, mine is for a 2009 R1200GSA

The recall says the parts aren't available yet, so scheduling an appointment is not in the books right now. Apparently we will receive a "first class letter" when they are available and then make an appointment to have it done. It's funny since there apparently was a fix made and has been installed on later bikes as I understand it.

Re: Recall

Check the link I posted above for pics and details.

Existing bikes that show no signs of cracking get a screw-on support clamp installed to eliminate possible cracks. This is easy to do at the local dealer, and much cheaper than replacing the entire fuel pump plate assembly.

If there are signs of cracking, then the failed fuel pump plate gets replaced with a newer version, which has had a metallic support ring embedded at the factory. This is the solution for all new bikes, but the clamps works just fine for older bikes that aren't leaking.

I got my notices today as well . . .

Re: Recall

Bought a new to me 2008 K1200GT with a Hannigan Side car on November of
2013. None of my 5 BMWs have ever been to a dealer while in my possession
- especially since there are none in Cincinnati for the past 8 years. So I
decided to drop my bike in to Motohio in Columbus for 3 warranty /recall issues
that have been been getting so much notoriety!!

Well it turns out that the previous owner(s) had thrown some bondo on the
cracked housing on the fuel pump cover!! I never smelled or saw gasoline.

Dealer replaced the fuel pump and a variety of parts, got a new cam chain
jump guard on the crankshaft sprocket and a new dog bone on the shock
bottom - out the door with $0 out of my pocket!!

Much to my suprise this is on an 6 year old motorcycle

Can't beat that for ever lasting service . . .
