bag & Luggage Recommendation

So getting ready for the riding season on my new to me K1300GT and I am seeking
recommendations and those with experiences for:

- Tank Bag

- Luggage Bag

I have decided not to buy one of those $900 top cases and will opt for a luggage bag that
covers the back seat and hard side cases.

Re: bag & Luggage Recommendation

I have a Givi top bag with the new aluminium GT mounting plate for under $400. With the Givi you can pick the size and style you like and if you want paint it to match the bike. For soft water proof bags I use the silver BMW bag and strap it across the passenger seat when needed.

Re: bag & Luggage Recommendation

Depends a lot on what you want to carry, etc.

For myself, I sometimes use a large and bright yellow waterproof Ortlieb. Just use RokStraps to secure it, never a problem.

However, that 49L topcase will hold a pair of helmets. And I sometimes ue it with a liner bag for "hotel camping". Leave the helmet in the case, pull the contents for the room. For sidecases, I prefer the BMW liner bags- better shaped and better made- but for the top case/motel room bit, any of the cheaper generics is probably better- no need for the extra stiffness of the BME versions..

Re: bag & Luggage Recommendation

Through Twisted Throttle I got an SW Technic (?) that I really like, mounts with a ring on the gas tank opening.

Re: bag & Luggage Recommendation

I highly recommend the Bags Connection tank bags with the SW Motech mounts. They are very pricy, but well worth the money. The design, construction, build, and utility are all first-rate. You can get them from Pirate's Lair and Twisted Throttle.

The mounts have a positive click lock, and a one hand quick unlock/removal. The bag is slightly raised above your tank. It never touches your paint. The horseshoe-shaped mount does not interfere with your fuel cap. The mounts are available in a plain version or one that makes electrical contact to power items (e.g., cell phone) in your tank bag.

The Bags Connection bags and mounts support many accessories - GPS mounts for the bags, map pockets (lighted and unlighted), and even a camera mount.

I have had an Engage tank bag and like it very much. It still looks new, despite 50,000 miles of riding. My only regret is not buying a larger Bags Connection tank bag.

One comment:
SW Motech is in the process of changing their mounts. The older gray mounts have raised horseshoe ends. The bag hooks onto the raised ends, then clips into the back of the mount. The new black mounts lay flatter, and have a four-point clip mount. They are not compatible with each other, but functionally, they are very similar.
