Angry ABS Pump Failure

My K1200GT has 17,900 mile on it and just 4 days before I was schedule to take it in for the 18K service the Brake Failure Light came on and staid on. I got a call from the BMW service manager and was told the ABS Pump had failed and the cost (parts and labor) to fix it was $ 2,200.00. Daaaaaaaaamn! He told me this is a common problem with the K1200GT and that they have 10 pumps sitting on the shelf waiting for bikes to come in.

So much for fine German engineering (pump is probably made in China)! Boy, am I glad that I decided to buy the 4 year unlimited mileage extended warranty last year, as it covered the repair. However, I would have been really pissed if I had to pay $2,220.00 to repair and ABS pump on a 3.5 year old bike with just under 18K on it.

I have not found another bike that I would trade my for GT, but I will never ever own a BMW motorcycle that is not under warranty. I'm going to sell or trade my GT in 3.5 years when the extended warranty is up.

Smart move on getting the extended warranty. I had one on my 2002 LT (rear end failures), but didn't have to use it. However, this made me even on the cost of both of the insurance plans.

We think alike, I too, have a 2002 L,T a great ride, but sadly now it's to expensive to fix, so I'm giving it up for parts, "That others may ride"

Re: ABS Pump Failure

My 07 RT is going in Monday for a ABS pump. I am out of warranty and getting the satisfaction of paying for it. 2 dealers did tell me that BMW has reduced the price from $1,800.00 to $1,000.00 to help. Lots of these seem to be failing.

Re: ABS Pump Failure

I've had ABS pump failures on an LT and a GT...no warranty...paid the money and moved on. Most likely will not buy another BMW.

Re: ABS Pump Failure

I didn't think I'd buy another BMW either, when I went looking, I just couldn't find anything with Power, Performance, and Comforts that BMW offer. I guess when you buy a luxury item you should except luxury prices. (In no way should anyone infer that this is in anyway an endorsement of BMW pricing!). Isn't it a shame that Rolls Royce doesn't build motorcycles. Yes, I know who owns it.

If BMW really wanted to help they would do the honorable thing. Recall them all and fix them for free.

Doc, that WOULD be the honorable thing for BMW to do, but like the many final drives that failed did you see BMW sending out apologies and recall notices?

Like it was stated earlier, when you buy a bike that is fun to ride and is the most comfortable bike to ride (after a seat replacement ) cross-country, I guess we just have to suck it up and cough up the Franklins!

BTW, how is everything in Columbus?

Everything is fine here in Columbus. I'm riding my bike to work everyday now and having a ball (semi-retired and working 20 hours per week). I hope that I get to plan another long trip this summer. Hopefully, Oregon and Idaho.

Yes, the brakes will still work, but your ABS system is probably not working.

Take the trip to Duluth for CCR.

Re: ABS Pump Failure

More information on the ABS pump. The GS-911 forum has beaten this horse too. In post #16 of the following thread from I-BMW (mainly a K bike area, but...) are pictures of a pump being taken apart and repaired!!. Stuck brushes on the DC motor. It can be fixed sometimes. Worth a shot considering the alternative cost for a new unit. If anyone has a dead one, I'll pay the postage if you are tossing it. Would be interesting to open it up.

Re: ABS Pump Failure

The Brake Failure light on my 2007 K1200GT appeared yesterday, about 1/2 mile down the road from my house. I switched off the engine, then started the bike and the light stayed off. I went to my destination, about 10 miles away, with no further problems. On the return trip, the light came on again about 7 miles into the ride.

I have not had a chance to attach a GS-911 to it yet.

For those riders who had the ABS failures, did the problem start with intermittent brake failure indicators?

Check the brake fluid levels in both reservoirs, and overall brake pad wear. Sometimes the fluid levels drop too low as the pads wear.

That may not be your issue, but it is an easy thing to check.

When mine failed, the brake light stayed on continuously. Intermittent makes me think your problem may be different. Besides the brake fluid, I've heard that a weak battery can cause the fail light to come on too.

I depends what the problem is. I ran the gs911 and got the fault codes. I think they list what fault codes indicate they can rebuild your ABS2 unit.
