Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

I took my 2007 K1200GT out for a ride today and my yellow warning light with the engine symbol came on. I pulled over and the engine is making loud noises like a Ducati or a diesel motor. The noise does not change with the clutch operation. The sound seems like its coming from both sides of the engine. Can it be a bad Knock sensor? The power is surging a bit until over 4K rpm. I am afraid to go past 5K. Any ideas?

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Bummer.

Stop riding it immediately, and get it to the dealer when they open.

I'm guessing a loose cam chain, which could easily jump a tooth and cause Very Bad Things to happen. Or possibly a loose oil pump chain, but that's less common (but not totally unlikely).

If you're really lucky, it's just a busted exhaust header, like the LTs sometimes get. But I haven't seen that happen on a newer GT before . . .

Ken,
Not so lucky on the header. I took the side covers off and the exhaust is good. I am thinking a timing issue too..

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Ken,
I also read on one of your post elsewhere about your cooling problem. A week ago I was riding up the Moki dugout with a K1200R and a K1300gt. I had to go slow because we were stuck behind two motorhomes. My bike started to overheat. First it pegged the gauge and then the warning came on. Soon followed by the warning and temp gauge flashing on and off rapidly. I found a spot to pull out and let her cool down. The other bikes were fine. Any tips for me to check out?

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

These bikes tend to collect road crud in the radiators, which reduces the cooling efficiency over time. Whenever I do a valve check, I blow out the radiator from the back with compressed air and try to clean out any gunk.

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

I dropped off the bike today at the dealer. Just received a call from the tech. I did jump timing. They are awaiting approval to continue from my aftermarket warranty before they continue and fully assess the damage if any. So far this has cost me $29,000!

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Hey, Brian, my '06 did the same thing when I was trying to start it. The cam chain tensioner blew apart and caused the cam chain to skip thus throwing the timing off. Result was 2 bent intake and 4 bent exhaust valves.

Fortunately, I bought an extended warranty from Interstate STAR and they are covering the cost. $2400 worth.

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Denny,
I did make the mistake of test riding the new 1600. It makes every other motorcycle obsolete in my opinion. At this point I am really trying to talk myself out of it since the 1200GT is paid for, And buying the GTL will cause me another year of work until I can retire. If I were you, I wouldn't test ride one..... I will post my 1600 experience later when I get time.

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Doug, Sorry to hear about your bike. But glad the warranty paid for it. I hope you put the new chain guard in.... My dealer said they have not seen this problem before, But somehow new all about the new chain guard??? 7 bucks for the part is real cheap insurance. Anyone with the K1200/1300 should install this part asap.

I've been told by Lone Star BMW that all the upgrades will be installed during this repair and I won't have to worry about this happening again.

I'll avoid a test ride like the plague! Whenever I think about it, I'll head over to the nearest DQ and drown the urge.

I guess you don't know yet, but any chance they may have you up and running for The Chief Joseph Rally?

Anyone know if the chain guards were installed on the 2009 K1300 GT from the factory?

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Denny, They are supposed to work on my my bike next Tuesday. If everything goes perfect I should get it back Wed. Cutting it a bit close. I want to call them and ask if they have all the parts and enough time scheduled on Tues. to get her done. But I am trying not to micro manage them. Most people do not plan ahead like they should.

Lone Star just called. Upon complete tear down for repair, they found 2 more bad valves.

Re: Bad sounds coming from My K1200GT

Good news! No engine damage. Just waiting on a new cam chain tensioner and she will be done. Interesting news from a guy in the know. He said the old original chain tensioner was replaced with the new hyd one because all the complaints about the noise at start up.He thinks the new tensioner is causing most of the cam chain jumps. Those with the new tensioner are having way more problems.Good news is we can enjoy our quieter bike if we install the 7 dollar chain guard. He whole heartily recommends investing in this part. It is so easy to to install. If you really want to keep things cheap, You could probably get away with installing it without new bolts and gasket. So total cost would be 7 bucks. Just do not over torque the bolts and break one off. Worst case scenario the cover seeps a tiny bit and you have to buy the bolts and gasket. This job could be done in under a half hour. If you own a any of the 06 and on K1200/1300 bikes you need to do this job asap.

Terrific Brian!!! So glad it wasn't more serious.
Maybe you should lead a Tech Session and we could have a group chain guard replacement gathering.
