Oil sensor problems?

Was driving into work this morning - check the temp with the recent heat wave, and observed the 'Oil' with a check mark at idle. As soon as I got above 2 grand on the tach, the 'Oil' check disappeared and temperature displayed...

Got to work shortly thereafter and check oil - I'm full up - been on the watch after reading Dave's experience with oil loss on his old post...

Don't have the 'goofy' manual with me --- any ideas? Oil sensor??

Thanks!
Stephen

Re: Oil sensor problems?

From memory I'm pretty sure that the oil check only registers when you are stationary. Once on the move it switches to another reading... eg ambient temperature.

Re: Oil sensor problems?

Oil level tick is only visible when stationary and on mine as soon as I start moving the tyre pressure monitor displays

Re: Oil sensor problems?

I sure wish I could see that oil check mark again... I am still getting the <!> almost 5,000 miles now with <!> instead of the friendly check mark and dealer still can't fix it.

Re: Oil sensor problems?

My dealer has been trying to fix my oil level light for 6 weeks. I got
Bmwna involved and they emailed a custom software patch. Not sure if that fixed it as they are now stuck on a xeon light problem. Unbelievable!

Re: Oil sensor problems?

My 09 did this and it was a software thing. If you can call A&S BMW or SFO BMW but it took a day to get the update done >

Exclamation Re: Oil sensor problems?

What indicator are you seeing when the oil tik doesn't seem to be working and it turns out to be the software? I see my "out-of-range" image and it goes on and off - when I manually check the oil level it is at max.

It is the <!> symbol on the instrument cluster. Comes on when you are stopped for a minute or so with the engine idling (like at a traffic light) and stays on until the engine is restarted. Normally you should get a check mark that the oil level is ok under these conditions

Re: Oil sensor problems? <!>

I finally got my <!> fixed. BMW wrote a custom software patch for my VIN number. It took 3 separate attempts at downloading it, so it would "take" Max's BMW finally used a special BMW computer and it now works properly.
