Side Stand Short!

Why is the side stand so short? On my 2008 K1200GT, the side stand is so short it looks like the bike fall over any minute...

Am I missing some hidden reason that BMW made the stand so short?

Crappy sidestands are a BMW trademark. They are meant to be ridden, Not trailered or parked. If you want to feel good about your GT sidestand try an K1200LT on for size.

Re: Side Stand Short!

If you have aftermarket shocks this could cause the bike to be higher than stock and therefore the sidestands would seem shorter.

Re: Side Stand Short!

I fitted an add on from Hornig in Germany to raise the stand on my 1300GT. I park nose in on a steep slope at work and with the shorter stand, I was struggling to get the bike upright at the end of the day.

other companies do them too

Re: Side Stand Short!

Yep...mine is short too. I park it on a block of wood in my garage. Hey...I'm just glad my GT doesn't SMOKE LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN every time I use the side stand!

My fix to the short stand

I made my own spacer today. All I had was white plastic. If I can find some black I will redo it...

I rough cut it with a band saw, routered an area for the stand pad to fit into, and finished shaping it with a hand-held belt sander.

I attached it with some automotive molding tape (to seal the underside if the stand pad) and stainless screws/washers.

What do you think?
