High RPM's

Well I have had my 08 1200gt for just about a year with 12000 miles. Before I get to beat up with the mileage, I have two bikes so mileage does get shared. I will also preface my statement by saying that this is my first 4 cylinder motorcycle, several triples but no 4s. I have had many of the boxer motored BMW's and quite a few Harley's.

My point and concern, RPM's. I can't seem to get used to seeing a tachometer hovering at the 5000 RPM mark for long periods of time, and living in Nevada there are times that the tach is closer to 6,000 for long periods of time. I do like the bikes performance, its handling and its looks but those RPM's. I am starting to entertain buying another RT just to see the tach drop 1000-1500 RPM's in high gear. Have any of you other guys have this same phobia or is just me......................?

5-6K RPMs is nothing. Get it well above 7K and then see what you think. Or get it above 9K and then come back and talk to us . . .

I don't have a GT, but the LT shares a similar affinity for higher RPMs. These engines like to be in that sweet spot of higher RPMs, not chugging along like my diesel VW Passat which goes down the highway at < 2,000 RPM. Transitioning from the Passat to the LT was difficult, but the end result is better performance and a lot more fun.

Meese, you are the one that rides the high mileage GT right? From reading some of your posts I can tell you take care of your bikes but you don't baby them, in fact I think I read on one of your posts that you "ride it like you stole it". After all those miles (nearly 100K) do you feel the performance has dropped off any?...........

A local HD fellow has been test riding the RT and made mention to me that he wasn't happy with the torque development.................These engines develop peak torque @ 4700 RPM; ( that being about 85-86 ft. lbs.) and produce the peak ponies @ 6300 RPM...............When you get them up there and dialed in they really do get to sounding like a sewing machine...................they just love to scream........So to make a long story short.........the HD fellow went back for another test ride and when he came back he couldn't get that grin off of his face........... .........Ride it like you stole it......................

Not at all. In fact, after a recent stop at Grif's place to do a full service my GT is running better than ever. I did add the PowerFRK unit to smooth out the throttle response, but other than that it's stock engine-wise. I just keep it in good tune and keep on riding it.

As for the rpms, these Slant/4 motors like to rev. More, smaller pistons simply need to move faster to develop huge power compared to a large, slow V-twin. That's why some V-twin guys go for the opposed twin RT bikes, but I'll stick with my Slant/4.

So the bottom line is trust the engine to do its thing, all the way up to redline.

+1 on what Meese says! Over 6,000 the GT wakes up, over 8,000 rpm is down right exhilarating!!!! It truly is an awe inspiring machine that is just plain fun to ride!

If it helps to ease your mind, a particular RPM is easier on a 1300cc four than on a 1200cc twin, since all the parts are smaller and lighter on the K1300's than they are on the R1200's, and they don't move as far during a rotation of the engine.

The bore and stroke for the R1200RT is 101mm and 73mm, and RPM @60mph = 3150.
The bore and stroke for the K1300GT is 80mm and 64mm, and RPM @60mph = 3600.

So the average piston speed is 25.15 feet/sec on the RT and 25.32 on the GT - virtually identical in top gear at the same road speed.

Also, since the 80mm pistons are much lighter on the 4's than the 101mm pistons on the twins, the g-forces are actually much lower on the four-cylinder bikes.

What sounds better than a GT at 5 grand?
A GT at 9 krpr!

Wind it up and have some fun. On back roads mine is never under 7 krpm.

Remember: at 5,000 rpm, the engine is turning at only 1/2 its red line. Not even close to working hard. Let it rev - enjoy.

This thread is perfect timming! Just yesterday I was out testing this out. I have 11,000 on a R1100S and 1100 of them are mine. I also was keeping it under 5K and thought the bike slow. I was riding with a girl from High school who is not afraid of the throtle on her YZ600 and was running it hard and I thought Hay there is a lot of unused tack on my bike. So I started winding it out some and found out where the ponies slept. I will do more on this but YES take it up to 6-7 K and have fun. J.Michael NEW BMW RIDER PS My first post!

You want to do something else that is a blast, bang off 3 or 4 shifts to red line, an empty on ramp is great for this.

The grin lasts for hours - but watch out for leo's and make sure there is room.

I was out riding with a friend. He was on an H-D Roadking. Came off a red light doing a left hand turn onto an on ramp. Was hitting 90 mph in 3rd gear by the time I was 3/4 of the way up the ramp. Had a smile plastered on my face for miles. Roadking was still at the bottom of the ramp laboring.
