Just hopped the fence

Gentlemen:
For the last six years I have been duitifully driving a Road King and just two days ago had a 1200 GT (2008 leftover) delivered to the house. As of this writing I have about 6 hours total riding in cold Northern MA weather (yes, I took it to work this am).

General obsevations: Compared to what I have been riding
What the heck do you guys use 1st, 2nd and third gear for? I'm going 40mph, turn the throttle huge acceleration and I'm already in 5th. I'm on the interstate for a short (non break-in recomended blast) moving at 80 smooth as silk and I look down and I'm only in fourth and I'm thinking - God help me...

Little spooked by this front brake is all there is thing. I'm afraid I will get compliant letting the bike think for me and when things happen (and with this power I know they will) I want to be an active part of the solution.

Transmission - a little noisy or am I just slow? when I quicken the shift there is no noise and the bike doesn't lurch.

Looking forward to midnight runs from Boston up to the mountains - feel like a kid again

I think you've just found out there is no known cure for what you're experiencing - just gotta accept the condition and make the best of it, and keep trying. It's futile tho, so have fun while trying!!!

And welcome aboard to the forums - you gotta lotta info to find around here, when the wx keeps you off the scoot!!

Ride safe.

A habit you'll have to break is that short shifting. This bike likes high RPMs. Let her scream.

+1! I don't think she even begins to sing the opera before 7k.

Welcome Peter! Great post. HD does a great job selling stuff and folks do adore them. SO and I always wave to them as we pass at +20 or +30 MPH above their cruising speeds. We can cruise at triple digits and still hear the iPod just fine. If you want to haul ass and be able to stop fast safely, HD may not be your best choice. I can take 2nd gear to 80 in my Porsche. It's just a different world in Europe where speed is NOT a BAD thing. Do some track days with your GT and you will come to appreciate the engineering. On the road with all the SUVs and cell phone idiots, the speed can be a tad dangerous and at times slighlty illegal! Watch those deer if you are night riding. Welcome to the forum. Lots of fun and helpful folks here.
