Thumbs up Just Finished Farkling My 09 GT

I just spent the day in the garage farling up my new 1300GT. Bob Rasters came by to help out (Thanks Bob, you rock! ) and we got busy on it about 9:30 this morning. I failed to take any pics during the process (sorry, I know how some of you guys like the nekkid pictures), but I had her stripped down pretty far with nary a red piece of plastic on her anywhere. Here's what she's got now -
  • VStream Windshield
  • TechMount GT Handlebar mount holding a Garmin Zumo 550
  • Garmin XM Satellite puck custom mounted in wind deflector
  • Techmount switchgear mount holding a Valentine 1 in a Legal Speeding box
  • Autocom Pro AVI comm system
  • Motolights on Caliper mounts (amber bulbs)
  • Stebel Nautilus horn
  • ZTeknik CF tank protector
  • Tech-Spec Gripster knee pads
  • Rick Mayer Saddles
  • Parate's Lair helmet lock
There are some pictures of the finished product on my website at the link below.

Were any animals harmed in the farkling of this purdy GT?

I found some dead bugs in some interesting places, but other than the sushi we ate at lunch this was animal harm-free. I'll do better next time.

I would have loved to have heard the conversation twixt him and Bob during the process. Some of y'all don't know it, but Bob is a genius when it comes to NOT letting out the magic smoke.

Re: Just Finished Farkling My 09 GT

Bob and I work quite well together. When it comes to them long copper things with electrons in 'em, I just say yessir, get out of his way, and keep bolting on other stuff!

Kidding aside, Bob does the best work I've ever seen and I've learned a huge amount from him over the years on many aspects of bikes, farkling and electrical stuff.

Good luck with that David.

As you well know, farkling is more about the journey than the destination. So when I say "finished" I mean that in relation to the current leg of said journey. You know as soon as they make a Mr. Fusion and a Flux Capacitor in Apple Red Metallic I'll be bolting them on!

They are to keep me from sliding into the tank so I don't need to take "the boys" to see the head nurse!

I think it's far better than the stock windscreen. It smoothes out the airflow that does hit you and breaks most of it around your shoulders, greatly reducing the buffetting the stock shild causes.

And for XMagnaRider, it's worth the $200.

Very nice! Not sure I like the new style brake/clutch reservoirs but new is always hotter.

You will be able to prove one way or the other if red really is "cop catching".

I new I would like the red, but I'm really falling in love with it. It really is a beautiful color, epecially in the sun. I still get a little distracted by it when the light hits it in certain ways; I guess I should get over that for my own good.

I am trying to get to the point where the windshield is just eye level and the buffeting and associated noise is minimal. Call me a wimp or whatever but that is where I am trying to get to on my new GT. With the seat in the raised position my knees are very comfortable and I can put in some good miles. This however does put me up in the jetstream. I tried SM's foot peg kit but that put stress on the knees. I lowered the bars one notch and that is not as comfortable but OK. Down here the Beemer shops are not doing the ride and buy deal on the Vstreams so I get one shot at getting it right. I am tempted to order the larger of the VStream windshields. Did you order the standard or the larger one?

Thanks

Farkling :
Here is where I mounted the GXM30 antenna. It's magnetic mount works fine and it is easily moved to another vehicle when I want to use it there.

I bought mine a year ago for my 1200GT before the tall was an option, so I'm assuming I have the standard. I am tall (6' 3") and most of my height is in my torso (32" inseam). The windshield I have works very well when In just about any position I've had it in over roughly 12,000 miles of travel.

Top Case:

This is a stupid question but I'm a Neebie so I know I get a bye..
I just got a GT (08) I want a Top Case. Do they come painted or do I take it to a shop?
Anybody see a place where I can just get a backrest?

Don, did you dealer order paint on yours?

Don't sweat it Whitefield, ANY STUPID question I've ALREADY asked years ago! It would be nice if your local BMW dealer could "hook you up" with a nice paint job like those pictured, BUT, no such luck (at least at my local dealer). A local automotive paint shop should have no prob doing the work (pricey however do to increasing paint/impact coating costs--$250-$500! ).

Another option, rather than paying for an overpriced BMW branded case + paint, is Givi. I bought an all plastic top case in black. Not only was it much lighter than the BMW case, it already matched my GT's color. Nearly as roomy, also!

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." (Some really OLD friggin' White dude who couldn't have possibly known what he was talking about!) WARNING: Official HATE speech!

Re: Just Finished Farkling My 09 GT

There are two choices for factory BMW top cases. A 28L case with a back pad sold separately, and a 49L case with integrated back pad. Both are pricey, but work very well and can be keyed to match your ignition. Both come in silver/black only, and would have to be painted to match if you wanted that. That would be done by a local auto body shop, but some dealers have connections so they can help. The price varies greatly though.

Another option is an aftermarket top case. Givi has several options in various sizes, as well as an adapter plate to fit the GT's rack. These are cheaper, but don't look as "integrated." Plus you end up with a different key.

If you want just a backrest, then look at Bakup. These are a bit pricey, but work well and are very comfortable. You can buy them through Cee Bailey's.

They don't come painted, you have to go to your dealer or an independent body shop to get it painted.

Re: Just Finished Farkling My 09 GT

No, that was taken at the time of delivery. BMW bought back my 08 GT due to some technical issues we were unable to resolve (info posted in another thread). I got an 09 GT as a replacement in the deal we worked out. I had the Rick Mayer saddles on the 08 so the shop transferred them to the 09 before I picked it up.

As noted I'm using the Techmount handlebar mount from ZTechnik. Here's a link to it.

David - It seems like it would be troublesome to insert, turn, and remove the ignition key. Do you have any problems with that?

So, now that you've had the bike a bit, has it affected your promise to the He Man Woman Haters Club any?
