The Red Hawk Has Landed

I am happy to report that I am one of the first people in the San Francisco Bay Area to take delivery of a 2009 K1300GT! I am pumped! As you can probably tell, it's a red one.

And for the obligatory delivery shot

This is the culmination of an effort and interaction with BMW NA and San Jose BMW that I originally discussed in this thread back in November. Since that time my 08 GT has spent roughly 3 months in the shop (the last 2 consistently) going through a series of diagnostic and investigative procedures under the guidance of BMW NA to try and determine the root cause of the hesitation and non starting issues. I also engaged BMW Customer Relations to open a case with them in order to keep my issues visible and escalated in the system. I talked with Customer Relations regularly and with the shop even more so as various tests, parts, and other actions were taken to try and resolve the issues. Unfortunately they were not able to find a root cause that would resolve my problems.

My approach and discussions with BMW, both locally and at corporate, were at their core very simple - put a bike under me that works correctly and I'm a happy guy. Fixing my 08 GT was a perfectly viable and acceptable option. But there seemed to be something inherently wrong with my particular bike. I state it this way as I am convinced that the issues I experienced are unique to this bike, and I don't want my experiences to start a bunch of worry-wart and fear of failure threads on the model line as a whole, as I truly believe it is unwarranted. I know some others have had hesitation issues, but with the extensive amount of effort, parts, and diagnostics that was put against that issue and the other, I feel certain that there was just something wrong at the core of this bike that could not be fixed without basically building a new bike.

And after several discussions, BMW NA and I agreed that a new bike was the appropriate way to address my issues. I am not going to go into the details of what we agreed to as that really isn't pertinent to anyone but me. I will say that BMW Customer Relations and the other teams I dealt with at BMW NA, as well as the staff at San Jose BMW, were proactive, considerate, thoughtful and fair in all of their dealings with me. I could not be more impressed and pleased with the way the individuals I interacted with and the company as a whole treated me and handled my situation. Specifically, I would like to thank Katie, Jay, Doug and Derek at BMW NA, and Chris, Pete, Erik, Tom and the entire service staff at San Jose BMW for their persistence, consideration, and above par service while handling what has been a trying situation for both me and them. You all rock!

Now, if I can get a break in the rain I'm gong to go scrub those new tires in. Woohoo!!!

David,
I just hate it when a newer and better bike comes out. I suffer from poor self control. Your new bike surely looks great. I have a good feeling that this one is going to treat you a lot better. I look foward to seeing it in person at Cambria. Ride safe.

Re: The Red Hawk Has Landed

excellent write up and positive experience.

the US spec dealer here in Germany won't have the 13GT for a few more weeks. I'm torn between the R12RT and your bike (but not in red). looks great just not a fan of red.

have fun breaking her in.

Re: The Red Hawk Has Landed

Dave,

The bike looks GREAT!!!!!! Congratulations!!! It is really beautiful and I KNOW you can't wait to ride it...I would be going crazy. When I first bought my K1200GT, I rode it home in a 105 degree heat and high humidity (about 75 miles) and the seat GALDED me so bad that I couldn't ride for a week. I just about DIED with a NEW BIKE that awesome just sitting in my garage while I nursed a sore butt!!!! Hope you get to ride it soon!

Also, I noticed that in the shot of the bike from the front, I can see the depth of the red paint with almost an iridescence in it....looks REALLY great! May that bike and every ride you take on it be blessed!!!!

Jack trust me the picture does not do justice to the true beauty of the red. A good friend of mine just got his a few weeks ago. Here's a pic of Toms at Grif's Tech session 2 weeks ago

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, I keep asking myself, "How could ANYBODY need more torque than my 1200 already has???? - seriously."

But then, I look at the 1300 and drool. That is, except for the side vents (Ugh!) and the new controls.

Then I have a mental image of the dealer doing this...

THEN...I ponder SINGLE life as a pastor and well, it just ain't workin for me.

It is a very deep red and it changes as the light hits it. These pics do it some justice, but it's quite an amazing color in person. If not before you'll see it at CCR! I may even let you ride it so Grif isn't alone in hating my evilness.

It's no big deal, really. It just a bit faster, a bit smoother, a bit more torque, a bit lighter handling, a bit more comfortable, a bit . . .

Oh hell, how late is the dealer open today?

BTW, I measured the new handlebars and they are .5 - .75 inches taller than on the 1200. I just came back from about 90 miles of fun and none of the wrist or knee pain I had with the stock 1200 setup. I may not put the bar risers on this one!

Dave,

Did you check the handlebar height from the tank or from the ground? I just had an ESA II rear shock put on my K1200GT (it came w ESA I), and the bike sits about that much higher now.

Re: The Red Hawk Has Landed

I thought it might be so, based on my brief ride. I'm interested in which part they changed to add that height. And if they increased the throttle cables as well.

Re: The Red Hawk Has Landed

I measured the distance from the mount point on the steering head mount to the top edge of the handlebar where the actual bars bolt into, and the 09 was taller than the 08. When you look at them side by side the U shaped opening between the 2 mount points looks deeper, as well.

No, those are the Rick Mayer saddles I had made for my 08 GT. It looks like most farkles for the slant 4 GTs will work on the 1300GT with the exception of mounts that would have used the switchgear mirror holes, since there aren't any. I'm trying a couple of replacement options from Jerry at Pirate's Lair to see what might be a good alternative for mounting items in that area. I'll post more once I get a chance to experiment.
