Am I the only one who hates the top box?

I was installing my new Zumo tonight, opened the moto closet and there it sat. That big ass, ugly top box. I hate the way it looks on my GT. Kind of like a large wart on the butt of purdy gal. And so, it lives in the moto closet.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Hate its form, love its function. On a two-week trip through Canada keeping that much stuff dry and secure is worth the ugly. It is far less ugly than some of the other solutions, and works better when painted to match. 'Sides you can take it off when you get to your destination.

Buy the Givi. Looks nicer. Half the price. Sell the beemer box and pay for it.

I am selling it. I can carry all I need in my waterproof Chicane bag that Rok straps to the seat.

I hate the looks of it too. That and cost were the main reasons I went with the Givi. I would bet that the bag was designed for the RT. Sure matches it's bulky panels.

Re: Am I the only one who hates the top box?

Agree with ya Grifster that it looks like this big bulbous mass on the back of such a beautiful bike, but the storage aspect can't be overlooked.

To a new GT owner such as myself, I worry more about what that added weight will feel like or am I overthinking things.

Just turned 300 miles yesterday on a run to Clark's Outpost BBQ in Tioga, TX. Crappy eats and the wind about killed me! Couldn't imagine having that big topcase behind me in those gusts.

Not crazy about the looks but love the function and storage. Getting it paint matched to the bike made a lot of difference; it blends in with the rest of the beat much better.

Re: Am I the only one who hates the top box?

I love and hate the 49 liter top case, but couldn't live without it. For my daily commute, I leave it on, and leave the side cases off. Otherwise, I leave it home most of the time, unless I know that I really will need it. I keep two small Rok straps under the seat for those times when I have an expected package to carry home and the top case isn't on.

49 Liter Top Case Love:

* It is the only case that fits my very large laptop bag for a daily commute.
* After I park, it stores my helmet, jacket, gloves, other riding gear, and misc junk (e.g., sunglasses, rag, Plexus, etc.) under lock and key.
* It has a huge capacity.
* It gives assurance to first-time passengers that they won't fall off the back.

49 Liter Top Case Hate:

* It destroys the lines and look of the bike. Simply put, it is ugly.
* It catches the wind, especially side winds.
* It upsets the balance of the bike in many ways. It can exaggerate left/right forces when you lean, especially if something shifts inside unexpectedly. Because it sits so high and so far back, it lightens the downward force on the front wheel when accelerating, too.

Looks? Who cares about looks? It's all about carrying capacity. This pic was taken on the way to CCR.

Although I'll admit the bike did feel a bit funny at slow speeds . . .

For my commute I would be lost without it. I run the top box with no side bags to keep slim for the lane splitting. I can put all my normal crap plus my computer bag in there easily, and stow my helmet, gloves, GPS, etc. while it's parked at work and not have to tote that stuff around. From a utilitarian point of view it definitely rocks.

Maybe I should get some of the ADVRider stickers to help beautify it.

I can't believe you put a - gasp - Harley luggage rack on a BMW...

For shame.

I would NEVER do something like that.

....however, putting one on a bastardized Sears car top carrier turned into a trailer with a real $30.00 BMW badge on the back...

Now that's CLASS!

Yeah, but when you're on the bike you can't see it, so who cares?!

I'm with the majority here: I love the utility and function, great for 2-up and commuting with my laptop, couldn't really do without it. And it's not exactly ugly, just... um... differently attractive.

Ahh yes, I remember it well. My bike still has road rash from that little misadventure! It was a lot of fun delivering the air-executions to the Garmins, though. Regardless of the traffic, screwy GPSs, and even the tipover, we got to ride our butts off and had a good time doin' it!

When I went to the HD dealer to buy it, I parked my crusty BMW right in the middle of all the poser bikes (some guys were still polishing theirs right there in the dealer lot). The parts guy pulled the rack down to show me and I asked with a straight face "Does it come in anything other than chrome?" He stared at me dumbfounded until I said "Never mind" and handed him some cash.

I really like what John did powder coating his black, but just never got around to doing it. Too busy riding.

It was. The GPS said, "go right" which I did and everyone followed. What it really meant was, "left". Now, I didn't get them confused as I have an "L" and an "R" prominently displayed on each hand. I just have to remove the proper glove to view them.

I'll let Dave tell you the rest.

I don't know if you noticed, Dave, but my bike stalled 4 times after the oil change. Whassup with that?

Yes, I personalized it in a u-turn thanks to a hesitation or some sort of thing that plopped it on its left side mid turn.

It's less Grif's fault than it is his GPS. That's why we shot it.

I think the oil change may have been te source of my drop. They swapped it from dino to synth that morning and I noticed the clutch felt like it was engaging a little differently. Either the clutch slipped or the motor hesitated at the midpoint of the u-turn and, well, you saw the rest of that story. OF course, I still like telling the saga, I always start with, "We just finished chasing buffalo and antelope on the island in the middle of Salt Lake...". That usually gets their attention.

Burnt on, with ash rubbed into the wound(s). Very cosmopolitan and goes well with my ascot and slippers.

Just got back from Germany, Netherlands, Austria, etc. Saw at least a dozen RT's and narrie a one had the "pregnant pod" attached to the back. Most had backpacks.
Also, bad weather doesn't keep those guys from riding. Tough bunch!

Re: Am I the only one who hates the top box?

My top-box induces a high speed wobble at 150mph+ speeds similar to the Space Shuttle riding piggy-back on a 747 so I'm going to chrome the whole thing and write "Harley" on the rear, cause we all know...."if it don't go....wait for it......CHROME IT!"

In all honesty I hate the look, but I cannot get my wife on th back of the GT without the trunk for her to lean back on, but then she moans about the uncomfortable seat...yada yada....

I love being able to load it with all sorts of stuff riding or when off the bike and knowing it's secure from rain and prying fingers while parked.

I love that I only paid $622 from BMW Chicago and they only took a month to send it UPS.

I'm not going to paint it to match because then I may not be so likely to leave it on all the time. If I keep it on and ride with the side bags and a tank bag and the aeroflow with winglets and all the electronic crap I may have to get a Ducati 1098 for that sporty feeling as the GT is getting to be a bit of a tank (though not as bad as big-heavy the LT).

The small tank goes with the small........______________.

I loved my big top case on the GT (as Randy said, for practicality). Esthetics clearly suck and the top case design is in conflict with the shape of the GT. Fortunately, I got picked by a little red head years ago, it stuck, and no butt warts.

I couldn't put the large case on my GT. I think the 28L case is much more suited to the GT...

Only use it for long trips though; and since I don't travel 2-up, it has more than enough room with the side cases.

That Graphite GT sure looks sweet with the dark side panels. Now you just need to black out the frame like the newer K13's.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Ken, I agree the graphite looks sweet with the black, but what would looks matter to you? You'd just have that thing blacked out with road grime in no time! You one ridin' fool!

Hey, I can still appreciate a supermodel, even if she's not going out with me. Besides, the blacked-out drivetrain has the added advantage of hiding those messy gear oil leaks.
