Talking Ever Fired it Up with the Can Off??

I had to pull the rear wheel because I have a very slow leak in the rear tire (took forever to find, literally a pin sized hole dead center of the tread). I got the exhaust can off, pulled the rear wheel found the leak...grunt, snort, a few choice words.

Then I looked to the left and saw this big, gaping hole that is the exhaust header just sitting there, smiling at me, begging to tell me a little story. So I went back in the house and grabbed the keys, came out and turned the bike on. I almost didn't do it (8:30 at night and I kinda like most of my neighbors), but I pressed the starter button anyway. The bike fired and I let it run about 10 seconds and shut it down.

DUDE!!! It sounded so sweet! I just let it idle, never revved it or anything, but I can just imagine what that thing would sound like with the throttle cracked open pulling towards readline while blasting down the road, or maybe better a really long front straight at a track. Now I'm debating whether or not to take it for a spin with the can off tomorrow once I get the wheel back on.

Damn these things are evil!!

They do sound awesome, but man, are they loud. I bought a Two Brothers can and put it on. Folks looked when I cracked the throttle. It was donated to our CCR Silent Auction as I really missed the stealth mode. I like hauling ass without drawing attention.

Try it. You'll see what I mean. When them four cylinders get nailed, it wails!!

Change the lyrics to Lynyrd Skynyrd's song "That Smell"...

Ew ew that sound!
Can't you hear that sound?
Ew ew that sound!
The sound of death surrounds you.

Re: Ever Fired it Up with the Can Off??

My first BMW was a 1970 R75/5, bought new in 1970. Had 2 sets of pipes, one stock, one "way after market" . Local dealer said he always knew when I was on short final approach to his shop as it sounded like a Norton Commando. Used the stock pipes for long trips, the others for around town. Once, while mid-change, I was tempted like you. Lived out in the sticks with only cattle for neighbors. Lit it off with no exhaust, & headed for the county highway. 15 miles & downshifted every chance I had, passing a slug, @ all turns etc. Sonnded so sweet. Go for it man & enjoy the rush.

was this on an LT?

Still have it?

How loud was it, in comparison to a stock Harley, and did you have to do any cutting of the exhaust to switch it?

Very intrigued...

looking forward to your next installment...

but why did you take the exhaust off to remove your rear wheel?

was there something else wrong, or did you not want to take the rear "mud flap" off and just pull the wheel off and roll it through the exit hole that creates?

just asking out of curiosity...

If you'll take notice, we'er posting in the GT forum.

I did run a Remus on my LT, and the chip and whatever else it took to coax a hair more horsepower out of the fat girl.

I can tell ya, since I followed him a bunch over the years --- it sounded really, really sweet. Not loud; not obnoxious; butt did turn heads. If riding in a group, and Grif leading, and me near the caboose, I knew when launch time wuz and could just roll --- didn't have to strain to see, nor hear!!!

Re: Ever Fired it Up with the Can Off??

Well, I got the tire fixed but got hung up with some other stuff so I didn't get it back on the bike. Should get it back together in the morning, and I'm still tempted to take a little spin with the open header.

Re: Ever Fired it Up with the Can Off??

Shoot...all this talk about no cannister made me go take mine off. I cranked the engine and revved it. It was "FREAKIN CRAZY"!!!! You could really hear the lope of the engine idling and when you revved it, it would split your ears open....Neighbors came out! He He

It really is one BAD engine!

He was talking about the Remus on an LT. This is the GT Forum and that mod won't work with this can.

Re: Ever Fired it Up with the Can Off??

It's way back there somewhere...
Inserted a 6" piece of stainless tubing in the end of the muffler
dropped the "noise" a bunch w/ no noticable difference in power..
If you get serious and can't find the thread, give a holler and I'll dig up the exact procedure.

Re: Ever Fired it Up with the Can Off??

Not with my LT but in 1972, with my '72 R75/5 I did remove the factory mufflers and put on a set of Dunstall Megaphones from a Norton Commando. Not only did they fit perfectly but provided a great sound, something similar to a MG. Great stuff.
