Talking Picking up my new 2008 Aventurin Silver Metallic GT on Friday!

Well, after my final 7,519 mile trip on my 2002 LT, I have decided the fat lady needs a diet, as I'm getting older and tired of trying to hold her up when stopped or going slow. Tired of worrying about how and where to stop (landing her). 40.600 miles and I've absolutely love her when she's moving along, though.

Anyway, I'm trading the ole gal on a brand new 2008 GT (Aventurin Silver Metallic) Friday. I'll be starting all over with farkles and stuff. I just bought a Nolan 102 with BMW headset, so don't know if I'll be able to use the headset with non-BMW com systems. Any recommendation about com systems that might work with my current headset? Recommendations for GPS, FM stereo, etc (or anything for that matter) will be greatly appreciated.

Congrats, Dick! The J&M Inegratr IV will work with the BMW headset, but it's not that easy to mount on the bike. If you use it as intended (hung from belt) or wired into a tankbag it may work better. GPS is definitely the Zumo 550 and get the XM Satellite puck for your musical entertainment. And contrats on picking the fastest color.

Thanks David,
Can the J&M Ingratr IV be wired to a power source or must it operate on batteries only? Seems like there would be several wires hanging around if I used it on my belt. One for the GPS, one for the MP3, one for the cellphone, etc., which would all have to be disconnected every time I get off and on the bike. Maybe the RKA electronic tank bag would be the answer by putting everything inside the bag. Only the audio to the GPS would have to be disconnected. I'm not sure how much trouble that would when refueling though.

I wonder if they'll ever make one in Toscana Green?

It can be wired directly to the bike. As a matter of fact, I have one with the power adapter prewired with a pigtail and blade conectors to go on the bike (I'm using a CANBus helper from Touratech) with the Zumo and V1 cables sitting in the garage. I think I also have the battery pack so it can be used spearately from the 12V source. I've been meaning to post it for sale and just didn't get around to it. If you're interested PM me and we can talk about it.

If you want Toscana Green I know there are folks who can paint it. I saw a sweet looking burgundy red GT at CCR; the bike looks REALLY nice in that color.

Cool Re: Picking up my new 2008 Aventurin Silver Metallic GT on Friday!

Congrads Dick,

I would suggst you check out the Garmin 478. The screen blows away the Zummo and the Nexrad weather is great etc. !
Abes of Maine has them for about $750.

Those are very nice. I had the 278C on the LT and loved it. Especially the ability to put altitude on the screen. Isn't the monthly service price for the Nexrad a bit pricey?

Grif I agree . The beauty of the nexrad weather allows you to push through or reroute. The FM weather gives much less detail.

Congratulations Dick,

I have the J&M IntergratR on my '07 GT and it works great. I'm using XM radio for audio and have have my radar detector and Midland CB connected to it. All of it works flawlessly and the IntergratR is a bargain at $102.00 even with all the connecting cords you have to buy. Check it out at:

www.sierra-mc.com

I mounted the IntergratR in the fairing pocket. I had to remove the pocket and cut a flap on the back side of the pocket for the IntergratR to fit. All of the electronics are powered from a relay that is triggered by the accessory plug. This relay supplies power directly from the battery.
If your BMW headset is made by J&M,and I'm pretty sure it is, you'll only need to purchase a new lower cord. If I were you I'd get the lower cord that has a volume control built into it. This way, no matter where you install the IntergratR (fairing pocket, tankbag) you can set the volume near max on the IntergratR and use the headset cord to control your volume. This makes it easy to adjust the volume to the riding conditions.

If you want I can take some photos and show you my set-up.

Thanks for the advice, Bruce. I am considering this unit, but was concerned about the installation. I'd love to see some pictures.

Here are a few shots to give you an idea of my set-up.
You can still adjust the master volume, intercom volume and VOX with the IntergratR in the fairing pocket.
XM radio just rests in the top of the pocket and can be adjusted on the fly.
The plug on the left fairing is where my headset plugs in.
The little box on the left handlebar controls is a volume control for the drivers headset I made.

If you're interested in this set-up I'll remove the fairing panels and take some photos.

Wow, that's a neat installation. How do you adjust the FM radio? Can not see the digital display.

Dick, I use XM radio so I don't need FM. I didn't consider this, but it looks like you could rotate the IntergratR 90 degrees from the way I have it mounted. Then you would have the FM display and the channel selectors where you could see and adjust them. This would move the volume control and the intercom controls where it would be difficult to operate them. But, if you don't need the intercom and use a lower headset cord with a volume control it wouldn't be a problem.

Re: Picking up my new 2008 Aventurin Silver Metallic GT on Friday!

Picked up the bike in Atlanta today. 40 miles from BMW Atlanta started raining with thunder and lightening. Bike works well in the rain, though my arm were soaked and dripping down on my thighs. This will be a wet bike compared to the LT, but I love the light feel. unbelievable power and quick handling. I will have to have handle bar set backs to ride LD comfortably. I need 1.5-2 " back to feel right. If I sit far forward, hands feel good but ankles are at an awkward angle. I think I'm going to really love this bike after I get it set up for me.

As far a setbacks go, any recommendations? Are the cables long enough to do it without problems?

Your right about that David. It's soooo much more easy to handle than the LT and for an ole fart like me, that means a lot. Not to mention, the incredible acceleration, the yee-haw feelings, and the immediately crisp handling qualities!

Congrats on the new GT.

I had my bars set at the top and loved it. No need for bar backs. Try it for a 1000 miles or so and see what you think.

Congrats on the new GT.

I had my bars set at the top and loved it. No need for bar backs. Try it for a 1000 miles or so and see what you think.
I think I'm going to need them as I seem to support my upper body weight with my arms. I have to use my back muscles constantly to keep from doing so. I have a bad disc and don't know how it would feel after 500-1000 miles. This bike may actually make me exercise and get in better shape.

Hey Dick, you'll find the GT to a more "physical" ride until your bod gets used to it. When your Techspec grips come in you're gonna like it! After you get used to the bike, you'll be amazed at all the different positions there are.

Re: Farkle fever!

Man, buying the bike was the most inexpensive part of this whole experience. The worst thing was catching "Farkle Fever". I've researched this syndrome extensively and it's incubation period is usually 24-48 hours after purchasing a new K1200GT. Starts with I need this little thing, then that little thing, then this not so little thang, then the realization that " I NEEDS IT ALL AND I NEEDS IT NOW!"

I gotta tell ya that I think sumpthins wrong with my wife! She just said: "Get the bike if you want it. You've worked hard and you deserve it." Then tonight she says: " Get the bar risers if you want them. Get the tank grippers if you want them. Quit talking about it and just order the Zumo 550 with the XM antenna. It's on sale and a good deal! Oh and while your at it, you might as well get that com system you've been stewing over, too." Sumpin up and me thinks it's agonna cost me big time in payback later!

Oh hell, I just married the greatest woman in the world 25 years ago and she just keeps gettin' better, that's all.
