What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

As you can see from the last post, I just bought myself a GT, which I think is going to become my short distance vehicle because I don't think I can ride it for more than 3 hours, without needing a crane to lift me off. However, I know that some of you have put up some big one day milage on this beast and I would be interested in hearing about:
a. Your highest one day milage on a GT?
b. How tall you are?

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

I have done 1063 miles in a day on my GT. But those days are long gone, never to be redone. Not because it was hard or uncomfortable. But I have banned the use of interstates. I have done plenty of 7-800 mile days up in the mountains. Much harder and much more enjoyable than a grand of slab. If I wanted to ride the slab I would have bought a goldwing.

I really don't know how you guys do these 1000 plus mile days. I couldn't (or at least wouldn't) drive a car 1000 miles in a day. I'm not sure whether to shake my head in admiration, wonder or just pity.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

Just shy of 500 miles on my LT.
8 hours (most on BRP)

BUT 15 miles through the Bronx in rush hour traffic. That has to count as quadruple miles. I was walking the Fat Pig all the way.

I am not worthy to post in the same thread as of some of you LD riders!

Guys, he's asking specifically for next-gen K1200GT miles -- hence being in the K1200GT next generation forum.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

My buddy and I did about 1035 miles straight through from Bethlehem, Pa. to Daytona, FL., around 1980 (a very LONG time ago) in just under 24 hours. I had a Suzuki 550, might of had a shield and crash bars and that was it. The other bike was a Yamaha 1100. We couldn't sit for about three days once we made it to Daytona.

We bought the Suzuki just a couple of weeks before the trip, and had it ready to ride the day before we left....that was close. However, even with those repairs, it was nothing compared to all the work done on the LT, and nowhere near the expense. I never had any thoughts we would have any issues with either bike to worry about.

We then went from Daytona (115 degrees) to Marine City, MI (60 degrees) 1410 miles - took a ferry to Canada, headed east, visited Niagra Falls, down through NY, and back to Pa. Great memories! Had little money, no frills on any gear. Just bare essentials. Blue jeans, boots, a good helmet and gloves. No cell phones, com or GPS in those days.

The most I've done on the LT so far is about 440 miles in a day.

Trying to relive those memories, my buddy and I took our first joint MC journey a month or so ago. Five hours on the interstate, total of about 17 hours for me having to stay awake, and a month to recover. I don't plan on any long distance driving, by any means, any time soon.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

I've done half a dozen 1,500-1,600 mile days on the GT. Plus countless 1,000+ mile days (my main customer commute is just at 1K miles, usually done a couple times a month).

But I knew this would be a Long Distance bike so the day I picked it up from the dealer it had bar risers, peg extenders, aftermarket windshield, and a custom Bill Mayer seat. It is more comfortable for me than my wife's car.

In fact, I'm just getting ready for a 2-week 10K mile trip. Apart from tire and fuel expenses, the GT just keeps humming along.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

The highest mileage I've ridden in one day so far is, 755 from Charlotte, NC to St. Louis, MO. on my 02 LTC. This was day one of a 2 week, 6200 mile ride out west. I think about that ride almost daily. The first day was extremely hot the entire day, I felt like I had ridden 2000 miles.

1016 miles from Algonquin Park in Ontario to Rothesay, New Brunswick on a K1200LT. Yahoo!

In a two day trip, we zipped down to Williamsburg, VA, 1340 miles this spring. Now that was fun - see avatar picture.

Wink Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

186 miles. This afternoon. From my house in Westchester County NY to Hartford. CT and back to visit Gengras BMW and buy a pair of Airflow pants before my wife could call to see if I mowed the lawn and so I could ride far in summer heat without my legs sweating and because wearing jeans on this incredibly uncomfortable stock seat gives me a sore ass.

While the mileage was short I may have set a new land speed record on this new to me (1 month) 2008 K1200GT, as I flew up and back on two lane highways. This thing really goes, I mean you see a car up ahead 2 miles and just squeeze the trigger and there you go right by. No sound, no fuss, just linear acceleration. Valentine 1 saved the day twice, and rear view mirror caught one CT trooper sneaking up on a fast pass in the left lane. I was cruising 70 and zipping up to 85 and 90 on the open stretches.

I finally got the words to the song "I can't drive 55!"

Sorry but the adrenaline is still pumping. I love this thing, and oh, by the way, driving 1500 miles in one day is insane, unsafe, life shortening, rash inducing and misses the point of it all, as you are just on a slab for 24 hours with all the other mopes. (YMM)

That was playing as I was crossing Nevada at well more than 55 mph, when the gps started freaking out due to the high speed vibrations. I figured it was probably a sign.

Not if it keeps me out of the airports and away from TSA, plus I still have my bike to play on the fun roads in whole new states. We all gotta work, but we don't have to be slaves . . .

I Like your response! Sometimes you just feel like riding and everything simply falls into place.

I know this is an LT but last year I left Memphis TN for Tampa FL about 850 miles and felt so good I did it in one day, even though the plan was to stop 1/2 way for the night. Felt more like riding then sleeping so I just kept on riding. I think I did it in around 16 hours.... and really didn't feel like I was in a hurry. Stopped several times to eat/fill-up and just stretch.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

I've found that the best trick for doing big miles on the GT is to keep moving. There are so many different ways to sit this bike, but moving is the key.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

Wow.... I was feeling pretty good about my 700 miles on a superhawk the first day I owned it, until i read some of those numbers! I can't compete.

(YMM)
I know how you feel. I have done several 200/300 mile days on the open hiways. Yesteray, while you were cruising up to Hartford, I was riding all the back roads from my home in Scarsdale to Scotts Corner and around thru your neck of the woods up to Ridgefield, around Truesdale lake etc. I did less than 100 miles in 2 to 3 hours. It was just fabulous.... Love the GT..

Kawasaki KLR600B1 1050 miles north Wales, UK to Nice, South of France

K100RS 1050 miles north Wales, UK to Nice, South of France (several times to stay down there for the Bol d'Or before it moved to Magny Cour)

K1200GT 950 miles north Wales UK to Bergerac near Bordeaux France to visit friends.

On one trip to the Bol 'Or many years ago rode down on the Saturday morning with a guy on a Katana who watched the 24 hour race he then immediately got back on the bike and rode back to the UK to be in work for Monday morning !

All journeys two up of course.

Howdy Laurence,

On the "Right Coast" you're dead-on, but out here on the "Left Coast", even at 100 mph, you have 20, 30, 40 minutes or more to take in the awesome views the desserts have to offer.

I defy anyone on this forum to ride from Salt Lake City, Utah to Reno, Nevada and not exceed 70 mph. To do so is analogous to Chinese water torture.

PS
- solo on the LT with Russell seat, 1200 miles (not bad, but for the heat)
-two-up on the LT with Russell pillion seat, 970 miles (easy, peasy, Nancy wanted to go futher for an IBA)
- solo on the K-R with stock seat, 700 mile (needed an ass transplant after that)

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

1140 miles, one up on a business trip, return leg. Temps about 98 to 104 all day. Stopped every 1.5 to 2 hours to drink water, gatorade, etc. I had just turned 50, and decided to ride to my next meeting over my wife's objections.
Turned out to be a great ride, met a lot of good people along the way, everyone wants to look at the LT.

Re: What Is Your Biggest One Day Milage?

I did a non-stop on my HD years ago from Northern Indiana to Colorado Springs in 19.5 hrs. I believe it was 1100 miles+. I mean non stop! No naps, just a food break here and there when stopped for fuel.

Mental note: Don't ever attempt to do that again!

1,207 miles. T'was the last day of a 20-day tour. Not chasing some IBA cert. Just riding.
After a 5-hour nap, I think I could've done it again.

6'3" (But I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.)

High Joe! The reason that I was asking about how tall you are, is that the bike would seem to be more ergonomically suited for smaller rather than bigger guys to do high milage on. It is interesting for me to see so many 6 foot plus guys being able to get comfortable enough to put big daily miles on their GT's. I have bar backs on my bike and just ordered a Russell Seat and a peg relo kit. So I thinking that if enough of you have done it, that I might be able to farkle the bike so that my 6' 4" frame can stay on the bike long enough to make it a good long distance tourer for me as well.

That is just the kind of guys we are!
On the other hand it was interesting to see what kind of mileage some have done on their bikes, how many did it on a new gen GT, and how tall they are.
I guess I may already be looking for my next bike... or not!
