How do you guys do it...........?

Just traded my 06 RT for a new GT. I think there is something wrong with this bike. At 80 MPH my tach is reading 5000 RPM's, that just can't be right. Seriously, I know there is nothing wrong with the bike but how are you guys comfortable seeing those ungodly RPM's. Most of my bikes (40+) have been big twins, a couple of triples there in the mix. The bigger twins are slower RPM bikes and I am just not used to seeing the tach residing in the 5+ thousand area. And some of you guys say you have had the bike cruising in the 3 digit territory, using a calculator you are over 6000+. I guess the bike was built to run in those stratosphere numbers. That just ain't right. How do we re-gear this thing...........LOL.........Bob

As with most things, you adapt over time. I rode HD for years and when I got my first sportbike (FZR1000) it took quite a bit to adjust to using the power band as intended on that bike. If I rode it in the HD RPM range it just bogged and snorted and was unhappy all the time. Just play with it (gently) and you'll find your comfort spot, and ultimately a use for the revs above 5K.

Re: How do you guys do it...........?

Oddly enough, that's pretty close to where my old '86 Concours runs at 80mph.

I guess coming off a twin, that does seem high, but this thing redlines at like 10.2K, so 5K is nothing. Plus, like most modern sport bikes, this thing loves the higher RPMs! I very seldom run it under 4K.

Wanna have some real fun? Wind her out past 7K. WOOHOO!!!!!

Sometimes I use the rev limiter as a shift point. RPM's = fun!

Re: How do you guys do it...........?

Former v-twin myself. The high RPMs did seem a little strange at first. My "v-twin" side said that was because it's a weak engine that needed high RPMs to compensate that it had no power (torque) at low speeds, like a beefy engine would. Sounds kind of whiny too, like a nagging, bitter, belittling x-wife that wants to bring you down to her miserable level. Not like the "drum drum" of the v-twin that sounds "like a man's bike".

Then you get her above 4K and that whine starts to sound like music. At 6K, it's the cooing voice of a pleasant woman caressing you. I don't often last long above 7K. Wait, the self-servicing thread has my mind mixed up.

Now, I just look at things as a % of redline, and the rumble of a v-twin seems, to me, bad design. I'm sure if I ever decide to go back to a twin engine, I'll reprogram myself accordingly. Have fun.

Thumbs up This isn't your grandpa's Harley!

That's only half of what it will turn! Run it up to redline in top gear then report back!

Re: How do you guys do it...........?

That's funny. I am accustomed to higher rev'ving bikes, so when I ride the big twins, it feels like I'm running out of rev headroom, until I remember how torque'y they can be at lower RPMs.

That R1200R loaner bike was fun to ride for a couple of days, but I was glad to get my KGT back.

WOW! By the end of that sentence I had my hand on a 12 gauge and was prepared to do 30!
