2008 1200GT oil change.

Having been riding R bikes for 20 some years I have come over to the dark side of the "K" bikes. Does anyone know where I can get info on changing the oil on a 2008 K1200GT?

Thanks,

Pat Patteson

Re: 2008 1200GT oil change.

Go check out our sister site - www.k-bikes.com. It's focused more on the newer K engine and I would guess you could find some information there. Check the Hall of Wisdom located under the "Technical" link at the top of the page.

Think I'd start with the owner's manual...

Re: 2008 1200GT oil change.

The owner's manual is good, but doesn't mention using an earplug to plug the straw while pulling it down from the tank.

The sites (bmwlt, k-bikes) really beat any manual as you get replies about hands on experiences and gotcha's.

It also doesn't tell you to grab some aluminum foil and use it to keep from getting oil on your pipes.

Question Re: 2008 1200GT oil change with electric pump

I have an electric oil pump I use to change the oil on my boat. Can I use it to suction the oil out of the GT oil tank and thus avoid all the mess and trouble?

Sure. You'll have to remove the basket that lives in the opening of the oil tank. Little fingers that press in to remove it. I broke the stays off mine so it just lifts out without having to play any games. Makes putting the oil in it easier.

Actually, draining the oil from the tank isn't the messy, or even hard part. The filter is the messy part. Make, or use something to direct the oil off the pipe, I use aluminum foil.

Don't forget to pull the plug on the pan under the engine.

Re: 2008 1200GT oil change.

Just a tip from my personal experience:

Do not buy a Ilium works oil filter wrench.

It does not fit either an '07 nor '08 K1200GT.

Ask me how I know.

Best,

Bill

Yep, these work for me, too. Just don't go all gorilla when putting the new filter in.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: 2008 1200GT oil change.

I use the same thang, but they're not as nice looking.

Psst... the fancy oil change socket WILL work, you just have to remove the shift linkage. But why add another step?
