Trade in Gt-05 for New GT or Kawa GTR1400?

I`m thinking of trading in my K1200gt -05 for a new K1200GT, or a Kawasaki GTR1400. I`d like all the equipment on the BMW, but think the Kawa is both good-looking and sporty. I prefer a sporty bike with touring capability.. What do others think!?...

Hi Kjetil,

I think you'll find this site definitely one-sided on which bike you should get. If you scroll down further in the new GT section you'll find lot's of threads that discuss the GT and GTR1400, not to mention the FJR1300 and the ST1300.
They are all fine sport touring bikes but none can match the sum of new GT when you consider all the categories. Sure the GT costs considerably more, but that's the price of admission when you chose the best.

I was just out riding my '07 K12GT and I used the ESA about 4 times coming home. WOW...what a FANTASTIC bike! honestly, I could not imagine trading it for a Kawasaki (of any model).

I'd say test ride them both then buy what fits you best.

Personally, I like the gadgets and refinements of the Beemers, but I'm kind of an engineering geek anyway.

Also try sitting on the Kow. That seat was made with either hardwoods or masonry. Now I know BMW seats leave a lot to be desired but the Kow seat was really hard. (tested at the International Motorcycle shows so you would think they would present their best).

Easy fix I know but that and those small side cases and the agressive position tilted my decision.

Well if you trade for a Kawa then your short time in this forum may be very short indeed! hehe

Lykke til

Take a look at this link and notice the comments from a current C14 owner on the GT.

I have a 07 RT. I went and checked out the Kaw. I was totally not impressed. Uncomfortable seating position and just an over all cheap looking bike. Glad I didn't wait until they came out to get my new bike.

Not surprising, as all the reviewers say the same thing. And I've seen that GT pic before, but never seen one in that color.

I'd just keep the 05 GT, can't get much better than that.

Re: Trade in Gt-05 for New GT og Kawa GTR1400?

ok... I have tested the GTR1400, and was quite impressed of the power and handling,- but!!!! when i took my hands off the handlebars, there was serious wobbeling.. The dealer had no explenation. .. And, I have to relize, im a Gadget freak,- so the GT is my choise. Tomorrow someone getting my old GT1200K -05,- and i have now ordered a new K1200GT -07, with 3000km, and will travel next week to Germany to get it..(only 2 used bikes in Norway, and both with "wrong" color.

With norwegian taxes it will cost appr. 27 200.
New -08 models kost in :
GTR1400 -08: 31500,
K1200GT-08, basic model: 32200..

PS! I`v ordered a dark grey one.. .. with xeon, esa etc... Summer -08 will be great..

From what I've heard the C14 (GT1400) is very sensitive to tire pressure. I have been told by numerous owners that low tire pressure will make the bike hard to turn - something I discovered when i test rode one. Could be the wobble was caused by incorrect tire pressure.

In any case, good luck with your new GT. I think you're going to love it.

Check out this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4UqjosssMs
What happened there, is this big heavy bike with low tech frame and suspension ? or just an accident ?

If you prefer a sportier ride, the C-14 is definitely in the running. But, I also have to say the GT beats it in almost (if not all) ways. I had a C-10. It too is a sport/tourer with sport being the oprative word. The ergonmics though were not good for me. Even with a softer (Russel) seat and KB risers it still hurt to ride it longer than an hour. If I hadn't of added bar-end weights and softer grips I couldn't have managed that. 15 minutes of the high end vibration left my hand numb or in pain.

Before buying my RT & LT I thought about the GT. Before that I thought the C-14 was my ticket to heaven. Until I sat on it. That's all I needed to do to know the ergonomics were even worse. If you like to ride a sport bike, or like the tucked in feel, then go for the C-14.

Just as an FYI, I have a couple of british magazines that rated the GT, C-14, ST1300, and FJR 1300. They surprised me at the time by rating the GT as a faster (best of the lot) motorcycle. When I looked at the numbers, I wasn't surprised. The GT has the same basic horsepower as the C-14 even though it is 200 cc less. But it also weighs less. And has much better ergonimcs and better 2-UP capability.

Before you buy, try a test ride. I didn't far too well getting the local Kawasaki/Honda dealer to provide a test ride though you may have better luck.

I think the only place to get a test ride on a C-14 is at some sort of "event",
I had cash-in-hand and could find a test ride anywhere in my area......just another reason not to buy.

Here are my thoughts:

The Kawa has the following negatives:
- No heated grips
- No heated seats
- No cruise control
- Less comfortable ergonomics
- More engine heat

If you can live with these issues, I'd say go for the Kawa, because it will be smoother, faster and likely more reliable.

For me, the above issues are non-negotiable so it was a dry argument. The K1200GT won because it did every I wanted, most things well, and nothing badly.

Good luck, whichever way you go!

I've noticed the Dallas area Kaw dealers now have C-14 demo models finally.
